Kill Or Be Killed

I've seen some other bands mentioned evolving in the scene league as ATHEIST but never Canada's OBLIVEON...don't forget them guys... that bunch were totally killer as well in the technical league ande just like ATHEIST and CYNIC never got much recognition back then....
incidentally the 3 acts played together in Waukesha,WI on 9/29/90, anybody remember that fiasco show?

Gone but not forgotten. I have all their stuff, and From This Day Forward, as well as Nemesis are great albums which I played to death (just about). They took a wrong turn, IMO, on Cybervoid (with the exception of Perihelion) and Carnivore Mothermouth, though. Songs like Obscure Mindways and Frosted Avowals are excellent, but the thing they seemed to lack, when compared to the Great Ones (WatchTower, Death, Atheist, Necrophagist, Cynic), is the ability to put in more variety/breaks in songs. The arrangements never got to be quite as interesting, but they're still well worth listening to if you're into aforementioned bands as well.

Well Martinator, I can only agree with you.... "cybervoid" was okay, there's some excellent songs on it like "Perihilion" (their best on this one) and went totally out of the way with the rubbish after this album...but the two first albums + the numerous demos as OBLIVEON or OBLIVION are pure shredding stuff.... As for the variety stuff, I can't agreee on the other hand about the variety theme.... the stuff just grows on you til no end and the boys were totally killer songwriters.... they had a different approach than ATHEIST who themselves had a different approach from CYNIC etc....

It does, no question, it's great stuff, and I wouldn't want anyone to try to be a carbon-copy of any other band (like Sieges Even's embarrassing debut). On the other hand, you can't deny that Obliveon wasn't as "jazzy" as Atheist and the others I mentioned, which my taste prefers. Actually, another band that really deserves more recognition than it ever got, also from progressive metal fans, is Nasty Savage. I'd rate them a bit higher than Obliveon. The Tampa Bay area was one fine breeding ground for metal bands!

Hey Kelly, it was Walt Thrashler or Steve Murphy from R. CORPSE who "auditioned" for ATHEIST???? Never heard about this.... I'm surprised about this fact cos those Texas boys had never been the most amazing act around back then....
Yeah that Day Of Death fest was a fiasco... the bill was really cool.... CYNIC, ATHEIST, OBLIVEON as highlights plus HELLWITCH, VIOGRESSION, MORTA SKULD etc etc.... too bad it had such a poor turn out.... but glad Bori captured this on video hehe!!!!

Well I wouldn't call NS progressive.... sure the "P. Point" album is much more advanced (but I wouldn't trade "Indulgence" or the first for it) but that's not either as progressive and advanced as OBLIVEON were....

I Just checked out Watchtower. They are awesome! But I don't like the vocals... Not my kind of thing. Still wicked music though.

I love Watchtowers Control and Resistance album.
Its almost as good as Unquestionable Presence.
First I hated the vocals, but I dont mind about them anymore.
As for Obliveon, I'm still wanting to hear some stuff.

Finally got a few Obliveon songs. Fucking amazing! Anyone who hasn't gotten a chance to check them out, Do it now! They aren't as Thrashy/Speedy as Atheist, but they are really Technical. I love it!

Should I try to rip a few songs off the first two albums? I just inadvertently created some room on my site (D'oh!), so...

The vocals-comment is a fairly generic one: few people I've talked to can stand Alan's voice on C&R. I was there in the studio when he recorded the vocals (for a few songs - I spent three days with them in Berlin), and it was quite difficult for him. It's still my favorite album ever, though, and I still rate WatchTower the best instrumentalists and songwriters in metal, 30 years after their debut.

He has a wicked voice in my opinion, but I just don't like power metal overly. I sent a few songs to my friend who is a power metal freak and loves technical stuff like atheist and cynic, and he loved it haha it was perfect for him. The vocals have since grown on me too, after only a day. I love everything about the band now
