This might sound like a stupid question, but I´ve always wondered if they are indeed atheist.

Kelly for sure I know is. Roger and Steve, maybe.. as they were around when R.A.V.A.G.E. turned into Raging Atheists Vowing... then to Atheist. But Roger had a priest at his funeral, but hell, I'm an atheist and I wouldn't care if a priest did it. Tony and Rand I don't know about either.
But hey, Atheist sounds so much better than Mormon.
Not that there's anything wrong with Mormons.

If you look back, religion is the cause of most (if not all) wars, just what is it that's so great about religion anyways? It was fine in a time when it was what brought civilization to society, but watching the news these days, what's civilized about society?

People are pathetic and need something to give meaning to their lives, because they're too dumb to accept reality.

I once had a student who told me that his goal in life was to be as nice as possible to everyone, as it always comes back to you. He is a well respected member of the community, and always goes out of his way to help others. If only others could follow that example, and stop being so selfish and greedy.
In my opinion, the only place religion has in society, is in the history books.
As much as I hate to admit it, the quote they say in a lot of the SCIFI series, "Humanity is doomed to destroy itself." is unfortunately all too true. Humanity hates itself more than anything else.

I always thought that should be "Can't we all just smoke a bong?" I'm sure Kelly would agree...

You mean seldomly, I presume?
Actually I remember Kelly saying, in an interview in the Aardschok some 15 years ago, that they weren't atheists at all, at least in the sense that they (not sure he spoke for all members, then) believed in some sort of higher power, whatever that might be - not necessarily your sterotypical christian god. Whatever, who cares anyway? Even christians can make excellent music (Believer) and if I dissed any band with lyrics I couldn't agree with, for believing in god or little green men or whatnot, my music collection swould be awful small.
As far as religion and other drugs are concerned, I prefer to avoid both and keep my brain as clear and as much mine as it possibly can be. Maybe I'm too much the scientist...

One can be an atheist -- not a believer in a God -- and still a mystic, as Atheist (from lyrics) seem to be. In fact, most ancient Hindus were that way, and as a modern but not modernized Hindu, I feel the same way.
Godhead, not God; transcendence, not dualism; mysticism, not mystic symbolism or religion (spit).

I think like a lot of metal bands, they were more anti-organized-Judeo-Christian-religions than they were anti-mysticism.
Some have gone even farther...
I agree with this, bands being more against the corruption and exploitation of religion rather than being against the religions original values and purposes.
Of course this differs from band to band, back in the day most bands did it for shock value and nowadays bands do it to keep the trend alive.
