that's right! Atheist are confirmed for Wacken Open Air (scheduled for August 3-5 in Schleswig Holstein, Germany). check out the website here: http://www.wacken.com/
Edit: Atheist should be playing the mainstage on August 5th at noon.
The line-up for this fest is fucking amazing. Atheist, Emperor, Gamma Ray, Aborted...ugh, it's not fair.

bleh, but you get to see Ion Dissonance on may 24th...
lol, ID are cool and all, but pale in comparison to those bands. Thankfully I'll be seeing most the ones I like anyway. Living in NYC kicks ass. We get everything! lol

sounds like what it was like when I lived in London UK, and worked for Totalrock Radio...
it's the one thing I really miss...
How come you're in Spain now?

long story...
Basically my wife is from here (we both worked for Totalrock in London) and things went south financially for Totalrock... so we needed to go somewhere we could afford to live... and her family is all here.
Ah, that sucks.
On a happier note, you going to any of Atheist's European shows?

Going to Wacken is like stepping into a time machine and going back to 1985... I've never seen so many cutoff jean jackets (with backpatches & patches everwhere) over leather jackets, with skin tight jeans and long hair in the same place... it's just crazy...
You get the feeling that that whole 15 year "metal being out of fashion" thing never happened... they have a whole lotta love for metal in Germany... definitely an experience worth having at least once in your life! If you can make it, go for it!

Wacken is an amazing experience, I think you could actually enjoy if even if you didn't like a single band that was playing!
I'm going to my 4th one this year, got my "Xmas package" ticket as soon as Emperor were announced :D

Hello, from germany,
Mostly we're sad that some of the greatest bands don't come over the ocean and you're envious for wacken.
Wacken was a great festival for all kinds of metal. but in last years it turned a bit too much in one direction ...Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Edguy..Music, ...you may know?
I head a headache from such opera music, however I'm no extrembrutal deathgrindmetalhead, but it was too much. nevertheless wacken is a worthful experience, and i'll go again.
How long does this forum exist. I was daily visitor in the atheist-music forum and suddenly it disappeared!?

The closer we get the more likely it seems that I'll have to goto Wacken to catch Atheist... not that I'm complaining...

Does anyone else think it's total blasphemy that Atheist aren't on the 'True Metal Stage' where they belong??? I cant believe the sheer audacity of these organisers not giving Atheist the proper slot they deserve!!! Caliban are shit, and should take Atheist's place on the Party Stage. Queer Fagtory should move down to the slot Caliban were going to play, and Atheist should take Queer Fagtory's place on the True Metal Stage (if not higher!!!).
Soulfly, playing the 'Black Metal Stage'?!?!?! Don't they know that every album Soulfly have done is dedicated to 'dog'?!?! They couldn't organise a fuckin' kids tea party!!!
Please send the organisers your displeasure here:

I hear you Tyler. We talked about it, but from talking with the Wacken folks and looking at the layout and the size of the stages, they appear to be comparable.
Also, the fact that we're playing Prague the day before meant that we were limited regarding when we could get to Germany and consequently the planners at Wacken had a harder time accomodating us. We didn't want to play in the early part of the day..which they had us doing at first. We wanted a better time slot, but couldn't be there to play the day before.....so the only option was to give us a prime time slot opposite Soulfly on the 3rd stage. So, it's all good. I mean, I've never been to Wacken, but from what everybody is telling us, it looks like the stages are all about equal.....They basically just have 3 main stages.....it's the only way they can have 3 stages going and two bands at once...having two next to eachother and the third on the other side of the complex...
plus, it's good that we're playing opposite Soulfly, as I think we'll have different audiences....it's not like we're playing opposite Nevermore or Morbid Angel or some other tech band.....So, at the end of the day, we're happy about it.

There is nothing to complain about in my opinion. The Black stage and the True Metal stage are almost equal sized.

I think this picture tells a little about the size. There is space for an orchestra, so relax. It's gonna be a fucking amazing concert!

Alcoholocaust - Atheist are NOT playing on either The Black Metal Stage or The True Metal Stage... They're scheduled to play this inferior one... The Party Stage:
http://img318.imageshack.us/img318/7048/woa040895ip.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The True Metal Stage & The Black Metal Stage (the photo you posted) are exactly the same size and are placed right next to each other. This Party stage is fucking pitiful for Atheist to be landed with...
Soulfly should be on The Party Stage (considering they're more Reg-gay than Metal, and shouldn't even be on the billing to begin with!!!).
Steve - I know you guys are just fucking stoked to have this opportunity to play as Atheist once again for us fans (I'm just as stoked that I'm gonna witness it), but seriously man... this is a COMPLETE injustice. A stack of my friends & I have already mailed the organisers about this in a petiton to get you higher on the bill. Also... not trying to give you all swollen ego's or anything, but don't underestimate the pulling power you guys will have over the Morbid Angel's & Nevermore's of this world! You can catch those guys on tour practically every weekend... I rather think that the majority of the fans would rather opt to see the band who they DON'T get to see every weekend... in which case, as long as you're not on at the same time as Emperor - things should be freeflow with a sizeable set of Atheist maniacs...

Steve, altho these are old, the stages are generally the same size every year AFAIK... anyways heres a couple photos I took when I went in 2001.

Excellent pics thanks. It gives me a much better idea about the place. That stage we're playing on is clearly smaller than the other ones but still massive in its own right.
And thanks for passing along your displeasure to the WOA folks Tyler. We appreciate it very much. You've given us a great compliment and you make a great case for us to be moved..... I think we DO deserve the same billing.... but you're right, we're just so stoked to be doing this and to be going there and to have such a strong - and growing - following after all these years..... the whole thing just blows me away and, as a result, I didn't even think about something like playing on the 3rd stage....
Again, unfortunately, we are somewhat limited in when we can get there as we're playing in Prague on Thursday and we have to drive from Prague to Wacken on Friday - an all-day trip. As I said, they originally had us playing at the noon/13:00 slot on the Black or True Metal stage and we didn't want to plaly so early. Plus, we then booked that Prague show and so that took out us being able to get there to play on Friday.... what we ended up with was a much better time slot 6:45/18:45....much preferred but on that other stage.
What I'm saying is I don't think that the WOA people thought of us as a lesser act deserving of less respect and a dimished position in the lineup.....I could be wrong, but I think they did what they could to accommodate our request to play later, so that meant playing on the 3rd stage....
But, hey, who knows, maybe if enough people like you write in to them to scream, they'll move us.
Thanks again for shouting outloud!!

You're right Steve. I don't think it's a sign of disrepect, especially if they moved you to the Party Stage to get you a better time slot (although I agree you deserve to be playing one of the huge stages). Having been there (both as a spectactor and player), I know a bit about their organization. The fact is that there are of course many, many bands playing (though I see that there are way less this year), and not every band can get the big stages and the good time slots. Many important and deserving bands played the Party Stage over the years, don't worry about it (Rose Tattoo is playing the Party Stage this year, after having played the True Metal Stage several times. It doesn't mean they're any less of a legend !). I would have worried and screamed if they had put you on the WET Stage (a tent actually), this one is really the small stage of this festival.
But really, playing the Party Stage at 6PM is a good thing, don't worry guys :) Although that's right, being on the True Metal or Black Stage at 9PM would have been way cool !
You have to be careful with the running orders though, Wacken running orders (like some other festivals) are only really definite on the very last day, usually on the day of the festival :)

Tyler: My bad, last time I looked at the billing they were placed on one of the big stages. But the Party stage is a cool stage too, even though less people can get a great view on the band. Atheist asked for a better time to play, and they got it, with a little disadvantage - But some bands, maybe Atheist, fit WAY BETTER on a stage like the Party Stage, it's more intense and personal if you know what mean..
Steve: No, I found that picture on google. A bit sad that Wacken's picturegallery does not work. I'm looking forward to see you guys!
Sorry for my poor english..

Excellent feedback. Thanks man!! I appreciate it. I sound like a broken record, but we're just stoked to be playing together and to be doing these shows.....It's going to fucking rule!
I also like that we're playing opposite Soulfly...if the running order holds up that is. As I said in an earlier post, I think we'll attract non-competing audiences...... though I'm not sure what kind of fans like Soulfly and if they'd like Atheist as well...... what do you all think?

Steve,
I hope you'll be bringing pics back for us from the festivals!
Europe really has some great stuff going on out there. I wish I could get to Germany with my gf (her home country) to see Wacken for you guys and Celtic Frost.
What bands are you guys gonna hang around to see?
