Never ones to rest in between releases (well, except for all that time they took off after Anatomy), EXHUMED are preparing to release a split with IRON REAGAN, and have offered the new track “Gravewalker” for your ears to feast upon. The split, which releases January 7 on Tankcrimes Records, finds both bands contributing four tracks each–two of Exhumed‘s being covers of MINOR THREAT and NEGATIVE APPROACH, respectively. “Gravewalker” is one of two original tracks that Exhumed contributes, and it finds them in a bit more death ‘n’ roll mode, with crunchy guitars and galloping drums–in fact, it sounds a bit like MOTORHEAD. If that sounds like your kind of thing, head over to MetalSucks to stream the new track before it drops next month.

After 35 years, UK metal stalwart, Saxon, continue to deliver pioneering hard rock with their latest Unplugged and Strung Up.
Brilliantly recorded, mixed and mastered by Andy Sneap (Accept, Arch Enemy, Killswitch Engage, Megadeth), Biff Byford and his metal brethren bring new elements to New Wave of British Heavy Metal classics like The Eagle Has Landed (1983), Crusader (84), and Broken Heroes (85).
Bathed and layered in modern acoustic orchestration or re-evaluated with an ear catching remix, Saxon Unplugged gives music fans a celebratory understanding on how significant these archetypal rock songs are.
Vibrant and inspired, Unplugged and Strung Up is a true bench mark for a pioneering metal band and should be held has a compass for younger bands who see themselves still significant 35 years from now.

With his first full-fledged North American tour since reactivating the band set to begin next week, Luc Lemay of Gorguts is the furthest thing from nervous. In fact, he’s “been waiting for this moment for a very long time,” and is eager to “reconnect with the fans.” Given the fact that this will be the ‘Guts first long-form tour of America since reactivating, I’d wager to say that the fans are just as ecstatic. Outside of a few shows here and there, including a memorable stint on the 2012 Death To All tour, Lemay’s merry band of metallers have been biding their time, waiting for the official release of Colored Sands, before deciding to take it on the road.
The headlining tour in question finds Italian imports Nero di Marte opening, and Gorguts drummer John Longstreth’s other band, Origin, sharing the bill, but Lemay reveals that this was not always the case. “Initially, it was supposed to be Ulcerate that were going to open the evenings, but there was not enough shows for them to cover all the fees,” such as airfare and visa sponsorship, so he asked for Nero di Marte. His touring wish list reads like an encyclopedia of all things heavy: “Neurosis, Morbid Angel, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Napalm Death, Carcass,” and the list goes on. As for the latter-most band on that list… well, it looks like his wish was granted, since Gorguts will be opening up for Carcass on the 2014 iteration of the Decibel Magazine Tour. Before that happens however, there’s still the matter of this headlining tour.
Even though rehearsing might seem difficult when the members of your band are scattered across various parts of North America, Lemay insists his crew is composed of “very meticulous musicians,” so the end result feels like they “jam together all the time.” Maybe that’s not surprising though, when half of your band consists of Dysrhythmia‘s string section, and your drummer is a human metronome. Although it might be unwise to expect a lot of older material being played on this tour–or any Gorguts tour for that matter, since Lemay just doesn’t remember how to play some of those old songs that have been permanently etched into the minds of many a fan. He concedes, “most of the songs from Erosion, Considered and Obscura I don’t remember at all,” but to remedy this from happening 20 years down the line, he’s a bit more proactive now, making sure he has “everything written down in tablatures.” Hopefully this translates into a tab book, thus sparing the YouTube-viewing masses from having to watch inevitable deluge of wrong cover videos.
Although Gorguts has never had the most consistent lineup, Lemay has always been surrounded by exceptional musicians; perhaps none more unique than Steeve Hurdle–a crucial element to 1998′s landmark album, Obscura, and one of Lemay’s closest friends. When Hurdle passed away last year, the metal community lost one of its brightest lights, and even though he was not coming back for Gorguts, Lemay credits Steeve for giving him “the idea about making a new album.” Lemay reveals that “one of my biggest regrets is that he never got to hear the record… to me he was the first on the list to hear it.” And while Steeve unfortunately never got to hear the new album, his influence can be heard very specifically in two songs off the new record. “The music from the song “Reduced To Silence” was a song I wrote for Negativa, [and] just before I left Negativa I had written all the music for “An Ocean Of Wisdom.” As for the album’s instrumental piece “The Battle of Chamdo,” Lemay has more where that came from, and would “love to do a record with my compositions, but the costs are very high.”
Gorguts is a band defined by reinvention and bold new beginnings. Each album has a distinct feeling of immersion unique to itself, and Lemay’s golden songwriting rule mirrors this. “Each song’s beginnings have to be very, very different from one another,” and judging by the reception Colored Sands has received, it’s probably fair to say this is his strongest beginning yet. Now who wants to spearhead the Luc Does Classical Kickstarter?

Sundsvall, Sweden-based technical death metal horde, SOREPTION, is pleased to announce February 18, 2014 as the official worldwide release date of their forthcoming new full-length, Engineering The Void. Album teaser below
SOREPTION will unleash Engineering The Void to the masses this February followed by a reissue of Deterioration Of Minds, both via Unique Leader Records. Preorder links and video clips to be unveiled in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
Maybe it’s my misguided Midwestern pride, or just the fact that their music still holds up today, but I’ve always been a fan of Wisconsin’s MORTA SKULD. While they certainly don’t seem out of place with the older bands such as OBITUARY or AUTOPSY, there’s always been something off-kilter in those old records that make Morta Skuld stand out. Something in the riffs, the atmosphere… maybe it’s just the dumb name. Whatever the case may be, the band is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album by releasing a remastered version of the cult classic through their original label Peaceville, and I implore you to listen. If not for me, then for the band who is no doubt banking on this remaster to pay off their vacation homes in Tahiti.
Proving that if you hang in there long enough, you’re bound to end up on the Billboard charts one way or another, DEICIDE‘s latest effort In the Minds of Evil ranked third on the Heatseekers chart last week with 2,706 copies sold. While that’s probably the amount of records Michael Jackson still sells a day, it’s nothing to sneeze at for the old Bible-bashers. In addition to this personal-best record, the band just released a music video for the track “End the Wrath of God,” which can be viewed below. It’s black and white so it’s more brutal and stuff.
Who better to brighten up a dreary day than melancholic black metallers DRUDKH? The band is currently streaming the track “…W Krainie Drzew,” originally recorded by the Polish band HEFEYSTOS, off their upcoming split with WINTERFYLLETH due for release in January 2014. Truth be told, I think they were just trying to fit as many inarticulate band names as they could into one press release. Regardless, the track is definitely worth listening to, and you can find out for yourself over at Stereogum. Who said the Ukraine was weak?
The beautifully burly gentlemen of INTRONAUT have released an appropriately trippy video for the song “Harmonomicon” off their latest album Habitual Levitations. In addition to the video, which can be viewed below, the band has announced a United States tour in support of BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME starting February 2014. The package also includes the always-controversial quasi-black metal act DEAFHEAVEN, as well as openers THE KINDRED. For a full list of tour dates, look below the video.

In a year filled with death metal reunions (GORGUTS!), here comes ARTIFICIAL BRAIN to restore faith in the masses that believed only the legends could do the genre justice. The band features half of the guitar-team behind REVOCATION, but luckily that’s where the connections end, as Artificial Brain proves to be a tad more interesting fare. MetalSucks is currently streaming the 2nd track off their forthcoming (and awesomely-titled) LP, Labyrinth Constellation, and I implore you to listen to it. You know how sometimes bloggers say something, but they don’t really mean it? Well, this isn’t that–this is serious. February is shaping up to be a busy month, and you might as well mark the 18th on your calendar, as that’s when you’ll be able to get your hands on this heaving, filthy slab. Listen!
French bastions of brutality, BENIGHTED, have announced a follow-up to their 2011 effort Asylum Cave. Set for release on February 18 in North America through Season of Mist, Carnivore Sublime will most certainly retain all the aspects of Benighted you’ve come to know and love–if you love Benighted that is. While Asylum Cave told “the story of a schizophrenic, delusional man and his violent obsession with notorious Austrian torturer Joseph Fritzl,” the band is keeping the lyrical themes for the new album under wraps. If we had to guess though, it’s probably about the sublimity of the carnivore? I can’t be certain, but something in the album’s title just points me in that direction…

Greek metal masters SEPTICFLESH have announced an January 21st North American release date for the reissue of their full-length ‘A Fallen Temple‘ album. The initial lineup for the 2014 installment of the New England Metal & Hardcore Festival (NEMHF) has been announced, and seemingly exists only to make us wonder why NILE is on the bill. Not that we’re complaining, but they hardly seem ideal bedfellows with ICED EARTH and BLEEDING THROUGH. Regardless, the 16th annual jaunt will take place from April 17-19 at the Worcester Palladium, and the full lineup can be seen below. If nothing else, it will certainly be an excellent primer for Maryland Deathfest.

The puke-splattered vinyl will come complete with a 24″x36″ foldout poster and numbered toe tag, all housed in a “black body-bag” shrinkwrap. Devoted fans in the USA can look for this release at participating retailers this November 29, but given Black Friday’s reputation, you better start camping out now. Oh wait–everybody’s probably gonna be at Best Buy, so you might be able to sleep in and still snag it.

Following the recent proclamation that defunct metalcore pioneers, BLOODLET, will make a special one-time appearance — reuniting for the A389 X Bash in January — today, the label also proudly confirms two special pending releases from the band in 2014.
First up, A389 will release an unreleased BLOODLET demo, recorded in 1994! The track, called “Embrace,” was recorded with several other songs prior to the release of the band’s debut LP, Entheogen. A track which ran astray from the others recorded in the same sessions — “Shell” and “Cheribum” appearing on the band’s Shell 7″, and then re-appeared on their Eclectic singles compilation LP — BLOODLET’s early, completely inventive style of ominous, swamp-born metalcore is relived once again in “Embrace.” The lost track was discovered by hardcore webzine XStuckInThePastX and shared the masters with A389 Recordings, who will now release an official 7″ version of the track in January 2014. The Embrace 7″ will tie directly into band’s first performance in over ten years, with their one-time reunion at the A389 X Bash the weekend of January 17th and 18th in Baltimore, Maryland, joining the reunion of Integrity’s Systems Overload lineup, All Out War, Infest, Haymaker, Noisem, Full Of Hell, Empire of Rats and tons more.
In addition, A389 is also collaborating with Victory Records on a special reissue of BLOODLET’s landmark debut LP, Enthogen, which Victory initially released in early 1996. The new edition will be released in a deluxe 2xLP in the coming months pending the completion of the remastering sessions, currently going down at Audiosiege.
BLOODLET vocalist Scott Angelacos currently remains busy with his present bands Junior Bruce – who is working on the follow-up to their The Headless King LP, released in 2012 by A389 — and Hollow Leg, which just released Abysmal on Last Anthem Records

Sure they may have just finished the first leg of their most brutal tour to date, but the Intergalactic Warlords are not ready for a break just yet. People have been asking when there will be a video for a song from GWAR’s latest masterpiece Battle Maximus and now they have an answer. Today your Lords and Masters bring to you the video for “Madness at the Core of Time“.
GWAR’s Battle Maximus out now on Metal Blade Records features twelve brand new tracks that not only honor their departed ally, but tells the story of GWAR’s latest struggle against what may be their greatest enemy yet…the insidious “Mr. Perfect”, who has travelled through time itself to steal the power of GWAR–the power of immortality, and use this power to mutate the human race into his twisted vision of what the “perfect” human should be. Once again GWAR finds themselves as the only thing standing between the human race and the latest super-powered shithead bent on the destruction of GWAR and the enslavement of their worshippers.
Following a short Antarctic slumber GWAR will return to the road with three shows around the holidays (December 27th - 29th) with Battlecross and Iron Reagan providing support. Then it’s off to Antarctica again before heading “down under” for their appearance on the 2014 “Soundwave Festival“.

Grindcore extremists MISERY INDEX has begun recording their forthcoming new record, and first for Season of Mist, at Visceral Sound studios with PIG DESTROYER’S Scott Hull.
The band comments, “We just began recording our first record for Season of Mist. Adam (Jarvis) has started tracking drums with Scott Hull at his Visceral Sound Studios outside Washington DC. [After the drums are done] the rest of the album will be recorded at Wrightway Studios in Baltimore, by Steve Wright (DYING FETUS). We expect tracking to wrap up in early January and are looking at a spring 2014 release. It is shaping up to be our longest and most diverse effort to date. In the meantime, we will be posting studio updates and videos, as things unfold. Cheers and looking forward.”
California black metal nightmares LAKE OF BLOOD have revealed another new song off their just-released new album, the 80-minute opus ‘Omnipotens Tyrannus‘ (which features the multiple talents of Wrest of Leviathan infamy).

This album featured massive contributions in all forms (strings, screams/howls, & lyrics) by Wrest of Leviathan/Lurker of Chalice and Scott “The Collects” Miller, former and original member of Sutekh Hexen, who contributed all sounds and noise of paranoia & angst woven in and between songs.
