November 28, 2016 ? Los Angeles, CA ? A few weeks ago, Black Star Riders announced their third studio album, Heavy Fire, set for release via Nuclear Blast Entertainment on February 3rd, 2017. The band has now revealed the first video trailer in which frontman Ricky Warwick explains the writing process behind the forthcoming album and looks forward to the band’s March 2017 UK tour:

When discussing the writing of Heavy Fire, Warwick comments: “Myself and Damon Johnson work really well together. We went to our manager’s house in Southern California – he was away for a week so Damon flew in from Nashville and I drove down from my place in LA and we hung out there for a week. I brought in a bunch of ideas and lyrics and Damon brought in some stuff too. By the end of the four or five days we had ten or twelve solid songs together, which was great. We work very quickly together because we’re always very well prepared and we’re always writing individually.”

ICYMI, watch the lyric video for ‘When The Night Comes In’ here:

The band’s previous album, The Killer Instinct, was released in 2015 to widespread critical acclaim and went on to score multiple radio playlists. A solid year of worldwide touring culminated in December 2015 in an UK arena tour alongside Def Leppard and Whitesnake.

2016 saw the band return to the studio with The Killer Instinct?s producer Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, The Foo Fighters, Mastodon), at his studio just outside Nashville. The resultant album is Black Star Riders? most accomplished work to date. From the immediate riffs of album opener Heavy Fire to the instant hooks of first single ?When The Night Comes In,? from the dirty bass groove of ?Thinking About You Could Get Me Killed? to the familiar and trademark dual guitars of Gorham and Johnson on ?Testify Or Say Goodbye,? this is an album that will further cement BSR?s reputation as one of the world premiere rock acts.

“Angst, passion, power, glory, love, truth, lies, loyalty, questions that begged to be answered. There’s a guitar army coming and it’s bringing the “Heavy Fire.” – Ricky Warwick (vocals), Black Star Riders.

“Not many new bands get to record three albums these days. Without doubt this is BSR’S best album so far. We had a great time recording it and can’t wait to play the new songs live on tour in March.” - Scott Gorham (guitars), Black Star Riders

Following on from their critically acclaimed albums All Hell Breaks Loose and The Killer Instinct which have paved the way for Black Star Riders to be recognized as a power force in the modern day of Rock ?n? Roll, Heavy Fire will be once again released by Nuclear Blast Entertainment. The band have also brought in PledgeMusic, one of the most innovative and successful platforms of the modern music world, to give fans extra special product and experiences to go along with the album?s release.

The 2nd Annual BOWL 4 RONNIE Bowling Party, benefiting the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund (, was held on November 4, 2016 at the Pinz Bowling Center in Studio City, California. Hosted by renowned radio and television personality Eddie Trunk and attended by 300 rockers, bowling enthusiasts and fund supporters, the event raised over $36,000 for the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, now in its seventh year of raising awareness and much-needed funding for cancer research.

Among the rock musicians in attendance at the event were: Tom Morello (Prophets of Rage), Brendon Small (Dethklok/Metalocalypse), John 5 (Rob Zombie), Dino Cazares (Fear Factory), Bjorn Englen (Dio Disciples/Tony MacAlpine/Yngwie Malmsteen), Chris Broderick (Megadeth/Act of Defiance), Joey Vera (Armored Saint), Roy Mayorga and Christian Martucci of Stone Sour, Tim “Ripper” Owens (Dio Disciples/Judas Priest), Michael Spencer (Flotsam and Jetsam), Monte Pittman (Madonna), Lizzy Borden, Ira Black (Metal Church, Lizzy Borden), Robert Sarzo (Hurricane), Rudy Sarzo (Dio/Quiet Riot/Whitesnake), Scott Warren (Dio /Warrant), Craig Goldy (Dio), Simon Wright (Dio/AC/DC), David “Rock” Feinstein (Elf/The Rods), actor/ musician Sean McNabb (Lynch Mob/Quiet Riot/Dokken), Christine Devine (Fox 11 News anchor), Damon Fox (The Cult), Chris Hager (Rough Cutt), Marty O’Brien (Lita Ford), Mick Sweda (Bullet Boys), Jeff Scott Soto (Journey/Trans Siberian Orchestra), Joe Colover, Jessie Sanchez and John Hatfield of The Others, Chas West (Lynch Mob/Foreigner/ Bonham), Joe Retta (Dio Disciples/ Sweet), Marc Ferrari (Keel), Joanie Pimentel, Lisa Pimentel and Nicola Belinsky of No Small Children, Howie Simon (Nelson, Alcatraz), Herman Li (DragonForce), Brann Dailor (Mastodon), singer Ann Boleyn (Hellion), singer Sonia Harley and members of the Barb Wire Dolls. DJ Will provided music throughout the evening.

The event kicked off with open bowling and a VIP pre-party for lane sponsors, celebrities and their guests. The evening included a celebrity bowling tournament, a raffle and a special live auction. 100% of the net proceeds from the BOWL 4 RONNIE will go to the Dio Cancer Fund. At the event, the Dio Cancer Fund presented a check for $25,000 to further the research of Dr. David Wong, Director of the Dental Research Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Wong is developing a non-invasive saliva test for early cancer detection. The Dio Cancer Fund already presented Dr. Wong with $25,000 at their annual Ride for Ronnie Motorcycle event in May of this year. Dr. Wong believes this simple test will become available for medical use within the next three years.

Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, Dio Cancer Fund Medical Director, explained that UCLA’s Dr. David Wong is not kidding when he has said he is going to find a “blueprint” for gastric cancer, the disease that took the life of singer Ronnie James Dio in 2010. Says Kapoor: “The NIH (National Institute of Health) has recently given him a grant to do a ‘prospective trial’ looking at stomach cancer biomarkers There is going to be a ‘liquid saliva’ screening test for stomach cancer that I and millions of other doctors will be able to use in our offices. This simple saliva test might have saved Ronnie’s life, and it will be able to save countless lives in the future.” Information about Dr. Wong’s research is available here:

A 6-string Jackson guitar donated by Chris Broderick of Act of Defiance and stage played by him while on tour with Megadeth in 2012 was auctioned to raise additional funds. Among the raffle prizes awarded were a specially-designed bowling ball and a bowling pin featuring the BOWL 4 RONNIE artwork, each accompanied by a Bowling Party donated by host venue Pinz Bowling Center.

In addition to emceeing duties, Eddie Trunk, host on Sirius XM’s “Volume” and formerly of VH-1’s “That Metal Show,” captained his own bowling team comprising Tom Morello, Rock Feinstein, Jeff Scott Soto, John 5 and Tim “Ripper” Owens. His team took top honors for the highest celebrity bowling team score. SUPERJOINT’s Caught Up In The Gears Of Application Release Show Nears

SUPERJOINT was resurrected in 2015 after the original band broke up a decade earlier. At the behest of the late Corey Mitchell, co-founder of The Housecore Horror Film Festival, SUPERJOINT founders Philip H. Anselmo (Down, Pantera, Scour, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Arson Anthem et al), Jimmy Bower (Down, Eyehategod), and Kevin Bond (Christ Inversion, Artimus Pyledriver et al) joined forces with longtime comrades, drummer José ?Blue? Gonzalez (Warbeast, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals) and bassist Stephen Taylor (Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Woven Hand, 16 Horse Power). A new era of the band was born.

Consequently, the band members found true joy in playing together again. After just two tours, new material followed culminating in the scathing sounds of Caught Up In The Gears Of Application. ?The minute we started writing, I knew this record would be brutal,? reflects Bower. ?Sticking to our true hardcore roots and signature SUPERJOINT sound, we accomplished a record that needed to happen in today?s underground. It?s pissed off! After being on hiatus for eleven-plus years, the chance at a new SUPERJOINT record wasn?t something we took lightly. With newcomers Steven and Joey, we were psyched and eager to get in the Lair and start writing and after two tours with the new lineup, we were able to hit the writing hard! Didn?t take long to accomplish, and we stood and smirked at the playback of what would be the new SUPERJOINT record. With songs like ?Receiving No Answer To The Knock? and ?Sociopathic Herd Delusion? we had everything to smirk about! This record brings our viscous style of hardcore back to life. Pissed off with everything to prove, SUPERJOINT is back!?

Adds Anselmo of the offering, ??The overall theme means many things, or no things, but there is an underlying message regardless, about how modern technology ? computers and all that comes with them, mainly ? has affected our lives. As a musician, it has affected my life both negatively (music being stolen) and positively (being in touch with fellow musicians around the world and staying visible). But when looking at the broader spectrum, computer-land has given everyday people a platform in which to bellow like carnival barkers about anything and everything, humdrum or political, whether qualified or not, some with good intentions, some with disingenuous intentions, and some with ideas that lay somewhere in the middle, creating a mishmash of results.?

SUPERJOINT will bring their venom to the stage for their official record release show on November 12th, 2016 in Dallas, their only US appearance of the year. Tickets are on sale now!

Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund

m/ What a great evening… What a great cause… What a great opportunity… and of course what a great group of people all coming together for a chance to hand in their rocker boots and show off how good they look in bowling shoes on the red carpet… Well maybe not so much, but seeing all these new and classic rockers coming together in Dio’s memory and to fight something we ALL can agree on… the bastard cancer.
This was the second annual Stand Up and Shout night of bowling at Studio City’s Pinz Bowling Alley… Teams made up of everyday people, everyday people and their musician heroes, and full rock n roll royalty put their fingers in their balls (yeah I just said that, sorry) and bowled for charity!!!
No one was off limits all the celebrities were accessible to the press and the guests. We all rubbed elbows and shot the crap… What a great great night for all and cannot wait until next years as this grows bigger, the night lasts longer, and it doesn’t matter who’s The Last in Line… You’re gonna bowl with legends!!! m/

Hard rock/metal heavyweights BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE have released their first single since signing to Search and Destroy/Spinefarm Records.

Titled “Don’t Need You” and produced and mixed by Colin Richardson and Carl Bown, this new offering serves as a sonic statement of intent as the band moves into a new phase of an ongoing and truly spectacular career; new label, new music, extensive touring… and a crown to defend.

Directed by Ville Jurrikkala (Nightwish, Michael Monroe), “Don’t Need You” has been launched with an accompanying video, depicting a wedding born of deceit.

“It’s heavy, it’s dark, it’s super-epic, it’s signature BULLET, and I think when people hear it they’ll lose their shit,” frontman Matt Tuck says about the song. “We love it, and I think it’s a hint of where the band is going next.”

Meanwhile, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE are preparing to embark on their EU/UK headline tour. The band will soon be starting work on a new studio album, their first for Search and Destroy/Spinefarm Records.

CARCASS continues to tour in support of Surgical Steel, released in September 2013. The record came in at #41 on the US Billboard Top 200 Chart, just narrowly avoiding the dreaded “Top 40 Band” moniker. Even with their impressive back catalogue, Surgical Steel has given the band their highest charting and possibly most critically acclaimed record to date.

Surgical Steel was produced by Colin Richardson (Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, Gorefest, Cannibal Corpse etc.) and mixed/mastered by Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Accept, Exodus, Testament). Joining guitarist Bill Steer and bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker in the band’s current incarnation are new drummer Dan Wilding (Aborted, Trigger The Bloodshed) and guitarist Ben Ash (Pig Iron, Desolation, Liquefied Skeleton). Original sticksman Ken Owen contributed guest vocals as well.

CARCASS has released several classic albums over the years, including Decibel Magazine “Hall of Fame” inductees Heartwork and Necroticism – Descanting The Insalubrious, and their influence has changed the face of extreme metal with every consecutive release. Whether it was inventing gore-grind (see Reek Of Putrefaction, Symphonies Of Sickness) or creating the template for melodic death metal (see Heartwork), CARCASS has always made records by which bars were set and rules were broken. Upon the band’s dismantling in 1996, fans mourned the loss of the seminal act and longed that the group would return again one day. In 2007, the metal world got its wish as CARCASS reformed to play several sold-out reunion shows around the globe. Once again re-motivated to administer a shot of cynicism and infectious riffs into the arm of a sickly metal scene, founding members Bill Steer and Jeff Walker began writing what would become the latest output of their highly influential career, Surgical Steel. Only the choicest of cuts were made, and blood sweat and tears were shed to bring us a record worthy of the CARCASS legacy. In short, Surgical Steel is just what the doctor ordered.

SUPERJOINT Premieres Caught Up In The Gears Of Application Title Track Via Loudwire; Release Day Looms

In less than two weeks, SUPERJOINT will unleash the sonic deviance of their long-anticipated Caught Up In The Gears Of Application full-length. Captured at the famed Nodferatu’s Lair, the eleven-track recording marks the band’s first new output since 2003’s critically-adored Lethal Dose Of American Hatred. Produced by SUPERJOINT co-founder Philip H. Anselmo (Down, Pantera, Scour, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Arson Anthem etc.) and Stephen Berrigan (Down, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Eyehategod, Haarp, Classhole, etc.), and mastered by Scott Hull (Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Pig Destroyer) at Visceral Sounds, Caught Up In The Gears Of Application spews forth an acrimonious crossover of hardcore punk, metal, and unrelenting, hostile, New Orleans-style angst.

As a precursor to the record’s official unveiling, today Loudwire delivers the rabid sounds of title track “Caught Up In The Gears Of Application.” Reflects Anselmo, “The title track pretty much sums up the overall feel of the LP. It speaks for itself, loudly, clearly, and passionately, whatever a person’s definition of that would be. Let the music do the talking and shape the lyrics to fit your own life.”

Get “Caught Up In The Gears Of Application,” now monopolizing the airwaves exclusively at Loudwire.

Caught Up In The Gears Of Application will see release via Anselmo’s own Housecore Records on November 11th, 2016 on CD, vinyl, and digital formats.

SUPERJOINT will level the stage of Gas Monkey Live! In Dallas later this month for their official record release show and only US appearance of the year. Support will be provided by Tombs, Warbeast, Wolvhammer, and Protest.

In related news, Anselmo currently graces the cover of the December 2016 issue of Decibel Magazine where he speaks candidly about the new SUPERJOINT album, Dimebash, and more. Pick up your copy today at the Decibel Store!

“The volatile, acidic savagery that the band is known for is just as present now as it was before they went on hiatus over a decade ago,” writes Metal Nexus in an advance investigation of SUPERJOINT’s Caught Up In The Gears Of Application further elaborating, “Songs heaving with hardcore foundations and muscular musical swagger detonate and decimate everything within earshot as they creep down your auditory canals and crush your skull from within…” Two Guys Metal Reviews shares the sentiment, “…feel the punch in the gut, get caught up in the punishing madness, suffocate on the bloody stump, and let yourself suffer under the strain. Caught Up In The Gears Of Application is exactly what it needs to be: raw, vicious, and unrelenting. Everything that has made the Phil Anselmo projects great over the past few years is represented here… this man is one of the truly great forces in metal.” Adds Capital Chaos “Having listened to this album probably ten times in the last twenty-four hours a few things really stand out to me: Caught Up In The Gears Of Application has a heavy punk influence mixed with a Southern metal sound. Philip H. Anselmo’s gruff vocals are still one of the best in metal period. Jimmy [Bower] and Kevin [Bond]’s guitars are steady and consistent and have just enough twang on them you can practically smell the swamps of Louisiana. And finally I’m a sucker for a good rhythm section, it’s the back bone to any great sound and Blue [Joey Gonzalez] and Stephen [Taylor] are pure metal magic together on this album.”

SUPERJOINT was resurrected in 2015 after the original band broke up a decade earlier. At the behest of the late Corey Mitchell, co-founder of The Housecore Horror Film Festival, SUPERJOINT founders Anselmo, Jimmy Bower (Down, Eyehategod), and Kevin Bond (Christ Inversion, Artimus Pyledriver et al) joined forces with longtime comrades, drummer José “Blue” Gonzalez (Warbeast, Philip H.

“The minute we started writing, I knew this record would be brutal,” says Bower, “Sticking to our true hardcore roots and signature SUPERJOINT sound, we accomplished a record that needed to happen in today’s underground. It’s pissed off! This record brings our viscous style of hardcore back to life.”

Adds Anselmo of the offering, “The overall theme means many things, or no things, but there is an underlying message regardless, about how modern technology – computers and all that comes with them, mainly – has affected our lives. As a musician, it has affected my life both negatively (music being stolen) and positively (being in touch with fellow musicians around the world and staying visible). But when looking at the broader spectrum, computer-land has given everyday people a platform in which to bellow like carnival barkers about anything and everything, humdrum or political, whether qualified or not, some with good intentions, some with ideas that lay somewhere in the middle, creating a mishmash of results.”

Commended by Sputnik Music for adding, “another gem to their already consistent discography,” THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER’s Abysmal was named one the best albums of 2015 by Metal Sucks, Metal Injection, and Metal Insider, among many others.

ABNORMALITY released their sophomore full-length, Mechanisms Of Omniscience, earlier this year. Crowned their most “polished-sounding and dynamic release to date and stands head and shoulders with everything else they’ve released so far,” by No Clean Singing, the record marries the ceaseless brutality coming out of New York and New England to the hyper-blasting intensity endemic to Quebecois death metal. Mechanisms Of Omniscience is as unrelenting as it is passionate, tackling real world issues with intelligence and raw emotion.

KORN’s ‘The Serenity Of Suffering’ Enters Billboard 200 at #4 and #1 On Both Top Rock Albums and Hard Rock Albums Charts

The Serenity of Suffering cover art by Ron English

As one of the biggest names in both rock and metal music, KORN’s accolades are unparalleled. With 40+ million in career spanning album sales, two Grammy Awards, almost 15 million social media followers between Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and over 22 years of non-stop touring sold-out arenas and headlining festivals, the band that forged a distinctive blend of rock and metal, which continues to be celebrated by fans two decades later, mark the October 21 release of their 12th studio album THE SERENITY OF SUFFERING (Roadrunner Records) by entering at #4 on the Billboard 200, #1 on both the Top Rock Albums and Hard Rock Albums charts, and #3 on the Current Albums chart.

With the release of THE SERENITY OF SUFFERING, KORN join an elite group of rock bands to achieve multiple placements in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 with 10 albums on the chart. According to Billboard, “Korn’s top 10 count on the Billboard 200 is now equal to Led Zeppelin. The only rock bands with more top 10s are The Rolling Stones (with 36), The Beatles (32), Dave Matthews Band (15), Santana (14) and Van Halen (14).”

Produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Deftones, Mastodon), THE SERENITY OF SUFFERINGwas heralded byThe Observer(10/21/16)as “…the band’s most intense release in a decade.” It’shighlighted by a return to a dual-guitar dynamic and some of front man Jonathan Davis’ most inspired moments of self-reflection and expression. It findsKORN-who is also James “Munky” Shaffer (guitar), Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu (bass), Brian “Head” Welch (guitar) and Ray Luzier (drums)–harnessing all the anger, power and trademark balance of darkness and light that made their name all those years ago with such tracks as “Rotting In Vain,” “Take Me,” “Insane” and “A Different World” featuring Corey Taylor.

Soilwork & Unearth Rock Pomona’s Glasshouse

Getting to experience Soilwork twice within a couple months has been a kick arse opportunity. Getting to meet and talk to them has been even better. These guys are heavy as they get, but as personable as anyone I have met in the music industry. Getting to meet up with Unearth after almost 8 years was an unplanned surprise. Trevor and Chris were great and invited me back to hang out and catch up.

Both of these bands came to tear new ear holes and they did not disappoint. Both of these bands are technically 2nd to none and recognize that without you, the fans, it wouldn’t be possible to play multiple shows in SoCal… So m/ to all of you who support heavy music!!! Here are some Soilwork and Unearth images…

ENSLAVED Streams “Heimvegen” From Forthcoming Sleeping Gods – Thorn Compilation

Norwegian progressive extreme metal icons ENSLAVED will release The Sleeping Gods – Thorn compilation November 11th via By Norse Music. A full-length album comprised of rare material from 2010-2011, The Sleeping Gods – Thorn is a unique collection of experimental recordings connecting with the band’s early roots.

In advance of its release, the band is currently streaming “Heimvegen” for communal worship.

The Sleeping Gods – Thorn will see release on limited edition blue vinyl (webshop edition), black vinyl, digipak CD, and digitally via By Norse Music.

The seven tracks comprising The Sleeping Gods – Thorn originally appeared on extremely limited EPs between ENSLAVED’s Axioma Ethica Odini and Riitiir full-lengths and were recorded both in Solslottet Studio in Bergen, as well as the band members’ own studios and partly in the deep woods of Valevaag on the south western coast of Norway. Like the songs themselves, the production is a mix of old and new; high tech and no-tech – a mix of concepts that have been essential in achieving the signature sound ENSLAVED has become notorious for today. Members Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson co-produced the material together with long-time collaborator Iver Sandøy.

The Sleeping Gods – Thorn includes lyrics sung in Norwegian, English, and Old Norse, with themes centered on mythology and the esoteric side of the runes, as well as contrasting the Norse Ways as a polytheistic belief system to the monotheistic plague of the Big World Religions. The music nods respectfully to the wildly varying deities that make up the pantheon of inspiration for ENSLAVED, both “then” and “now.” There are traces of the proto black metal of Bathory, the classic rock and heavy metal of the ’70s and ’80s, the synthesized and sequenced masters of the ’70s, prog-rock, world/Norse folk music, Norwegian black metal of the ’90s, modern classical music, goth rock a la Fields Of The Nephilim, and much more.

Tying he package together are the extensive liner notes Kjellson and a beautiful new layout by Costin Chioreanu of Twilight 13 Media (Roadburn Festival, Opeth, Darkthrone, At The Gates, etc.) whose mesmerizing new illustrations display a unique symbiosis between two of our times’ most exciting visual and sonic artists.

The Sleeping Gods – Thorn Lineup:
Ivar Bjørnson – guitar, synth
Grutle Kjellson – vocals, bass
Cato Bekkevold – drums
Ice Dale – lead guitar

In related ENSLAVED news, this December the band – who are celebrating twenty-five years together – will descend upon New York City for several special performances at Scandinavia House and the Gramercy Theatre in honor of New York By Norse. By Norse was founded by Einar Selvik (Fimbuljod Productions, Wardruna), Ivar Bjørnson (Peersen Production AS, ENSLAVED, BardSpec), and Simon Füllemann (AISA – All Independent Service Alliance LLC, All Access Agency). New York By Norse marks the second installment of By Norse events – significant international happenings designed to support Norwegian art, music, literature, film, and culture abroad. The Noisey-sponsored gala will find ENSLAVED joined by Norwegian folk collective Wardruna and includes unique art exhibitions, workshops and special showcases spanning over two days.

On Friday, December 9th, Scandinavia House welcomes Bjørnson and Selvik for a special evening that will introduce New York audiences to BardSpec, a new project from Bjørnson, and the music of Wardruna, Selvik’s vehicle for showcasing old Norse instruments and musical traditions. For this special New York By Norse event performance, Bjørnson will be joined for one song by Gorguts mastermind Keven Hufnagel. BardSpec comprises Ivar, his computer, some keys, a few strings, a pedal or two, a video canon, and sometimes even a trapeze artist. The direction is dark, surprisingly rhythmic, and psychedelically hypnotic. In sound and concept, BardSpec is about minimizing, cutting away, subtracting, and meditating upon the simplest essence of things-the basic elements and building blocks that make up the whole.

On Saturday, December 10th, ENSLAVED will take over the Gramercy Theatre and play two very special sets – one focused on older material, and one highlighting their more recent musical machinations. Attendees can also expect art exhibition from Norwegian motion designer Kim Holm, performances by Selvik and Bjørnson’s project, Skuggsjá (as well as a solo set from Selvik), and a Grimposium panel focusing on ENSLAVED’s history.

COGNITIVE: Metal Injection Premieres Deformity Full-Length From Brutal Death Metal Faction In Advance Of Friday’s Release

This Friday, Garden State-based death metal faction COGNITIVE will unleash their pulverizing Deformity full-length upon the masses. The nine-track offering was captured at Full Force Studio by Joe Cincotta (Suffocation, Internal Bleeding, Dehumanized), mastered at West West Side Studios by Alan Douches (Cannibal Corpse, Converge, Black Breath, Mastodon et al), and includes a guest appearance by Misery Index’s Mark Kloeppel.

Hailing the band’s, “perfect mix between brutal, progressive, and chaotic that all melds together into one singular form with only one goal: sheer destruction,” Metal Injection is currently streaming the record before you can buy it!

Get brutal with COGNITIVE’s Deformity courtesy of Metal Injection, at THIS LOCATION.

In a recent 8/10 review of the record, Dead Rhetoric writes, “No matter your preference within death metal, you should be able to find elements of COGNITIVE to your liking. Deformity revels in technical riffing that never goes too overboard, grooves and subtle melody that hold your interest, and searing aggression from start to finish. COGNITIVE is ready to make their mark upon death metal.” HeavymuiscHQ champions, “A modern showcase of meaty, chugging riffs, as savage as they are intricate, with hammering octopod drumming, a tandem of ursine and demonic vocals, and an affinity for atonal leads and energetic staccato rhythm,” further elaborating, “COGNITIVE embrace the weird and deliver some seriously rad and groovy death metal. If Decapitated, Aborted, Benighted, and, say, Pathology, get your blood flowing, then by all means, check out COGINITIVE.” Adds No Clean Singing upon their premiere of “Haunted Justice,” “At the outset, it’s an overpowering torrent of vicious sound propelled by drumming that simulates a war zone and by slashing, meat-cleaving riffs operating at top speed, coupled with monstrous roars and hair-on-fire shrieking. After this opening barrage has effectively cracked open your cranium like an egg and ejected your eyeballs from the skull due to explosive pressure, then COGNITIVE starts messing with your brain in an eerie, neuron-scrambling interplay between solo guitar and bass. And finally, the band erupt in one last frenzy of rampant hammering decimation.”

In conjunction with the release of Deformity, COGNITIVE will bring their maniacal odes to the stage on the two-plus week Birthing The Deformity US Tour which runs from October 28th through November 13th with additional onstage abrasions to be announced in the weeks to follow.

Hailing from South Jersey, COGNITIVE was born in 2011 with the sole intent to create heavy, intensely technical music, while maintaining an edge of creativity that separates them from the over-produced sea of subgenres. Combining technicality, guitar solos, grooves, and abstract ideas within their songwriting, COGNITIVE is continually pushing itself to think outside of the proverbial box while maintaining an organic and unapologetically brutal edge. COGNITIVE seeks only to advance itself musically and export New Jersey’s undying hatred globally.

5th Annual Monster Energy AFTERSHOCK Sells Out With 50,000 In Attendance Over 2 Days; California’s Biggest Rock Festival Featured 35 Bands On 3 Stages, Led By Tool and Avenged Sevenfold

Monster Energy AFTERSHOCK made its triumphant return to Discovery Park in Sacramento, CA on October 22 & 23, celebrating its fifth year with a sold-out crowd of 50,000 over two days in California?s capital city. With 35 bands on three stages, Monster Energy AFTERSHOCK?s genre-spanning lineup was packed with rock and metal legends, newcomers, and rising stars. Fans were treated to a rare U.S. festival performance from Tool on Saturday, an electrifying festival-closing set from Avenged Sevenfold on Sunday, plus Slayer, Korn, Primus, Disturbed, Puscifer, Meshuggah, and many more.

Monster Energy AFTERSHOCK showcased Sacramento?s status as America?s Farm-To-Fork Capital, offering free samples of locally grown fruit to festival attendees throughout the weekend, while those looking for more filling options chose from nearly two dozen food vendors including local favorites Drewski?s Hot Rod Sandwiches, Xochimilco Mexican Restaurant and more. California?s biggest rock festival also featured The Jack Daniel’s Experience, The Music Experience, the Juxtapoz MAKE YOUR MARK interactive graffiti art installation presented by Hellrzzr and Montana, Keep Golf Metal and more to engage fans with all aspects of the rock and roll culture. SiriusXM?s Shannon Gunz interviewed AFTERSHOCK bands backstage for the festival?s Facebook live stream throughout the weekend.

Monster Energy AFTERSHOCK?s economic impact to the region exceeds $10 million. As part of its commitment to the Sacramento community, Monster Energy AFTERSHOCK made a $10,000 donation to Stanford Settlement in the Natomas area to support youth programs and other neighborhood services. In addition, festivalgoers contributed approximately $40,000 to charities including Take Me Home Animal Rescue and Fxck Cancer / Dyin 2 Live. AFTERSHOCK partnered with Sacramento Parks to create awareness about water safety via the ?Life Looks Good On You? campaign. The Student Experience backstage tour gave music students from Scott Graham School of Music in Sacramento and ABC Music in Castro Valley, as well as local teen band URD-OM, an inside look at the workings of a music festival and opportunities in the music industry, including an inspirational talk about overcoming disabilities from Monster Energy AFTERSHOCK band The Mendenhall Experiment.

Here is some of the positive press response to Monster Energy AFTERSHOCK 2016:

?By noon Saturday, more than half the sold-out crowd for Monster Energy AFTERSHOCK had arrived for a full afternoon and evening of headbanging, courtesy of such hard rock heavyweights as Tool, Slayer and Anthrax.?
–Chris Macias, Sacramento Bee, October 22, 2016

?In the heart of beautiful Sacramento, AFTERSHOCK brought the best bands and festival experience any rock fan could hope for.?
–Anthony Lauletta, Alternative Press, Social Media Manager

“Aftershock 2016 was amazing. Great location, lineup, organization, and even the weather couldn’t have been better. The Juxtapoz MAKE YOUR MARK Graffiti Zone was a huge hit with festivalgoers lining up non-stop both days to take their shot as artists. It was great to get some local, more seasoned artists involved in the evenings and they couldn’t have done a better job. Each artist really came through and collectively they demonstrated a high level of talent and a great range of styles that worked well together.?
–Mike Stalter, Juxtapoz, October 25, 2016

?Aftershock is fast becoming one of the best rock festivals of the year? The main two stages told the history of heavy metal and Saturday was just a continuous onslaught of legendary acts: Anthrax, Meshuggah, Primus, Slayer, and then Tool. No other festival gives you that consistency of stellar performances, not to mention actually spacing them out so you can see either most or all of each band without missing anything else?Aftershock was able to straddle the line between respecting their elders and ringing in the new guard??
–Jesse Seilhan,, October 25, 2016

ULCERATE: Entire Shrines Of Paralysis LP Streaming; Album Sees Release Via Relapse Records This Friday + North American Tour Looms

The unrelenting Shrines Of Paralysis ? the fifth full-length album from New Zealand?s leading death metal unit, ULCERATE ? sees release through Relapse Records this Friday, the label making the entire album available for streaming early.

ULCERATE?s Shrines Of Paralysis is a flawless continuation of the band?s signature sonic philosophy, spanning eight tracks of forward-thinking death metal, incorporating a wider range of styles and ideas than ever before. Influences both within and beyond metal abound: organic, inventive phrasings and novel compositional techniques round-out a thundering package of death, doom, and black metal stylings. As is characteristic of the band, Shrines Of Paralysis is about much more than just the music. The production, themes, and atmosphere all shape ULCERATE?s music, and help guide the way through a highly evocative palette of dark and light passages, subtly dramatic rhythmic manipulation, and unparalleled technical heaviness. The band?s most cohesive and powerful release to date.

Clrvynt proclaims, ?New Zealand?s Ulcerate are a marvel and a juggernaut. Approaching fifteen years of existence, the trio keeps getting stronger and more adept as songwriters. In the realm of technical death metal, Ulcerate understand that a good hook is just as important as a ridiculous chord progression.? Invisible Oranges praises, ?A lot of technical death metal gets described as knotty, but Ulcerate are much better at untangling the strands. Guitars will start in unison and then one will splinter off or hang on a single suspension. Phrases will go a beat or two longer than they should, and Jaime Saint Meret will push past bar lines or abruptly jump from jackhammered blast beats into a flurry of ghost notes and triplets on the cymbals. All of these formal zigs and zags are impressive on a technical level, but they also establish a mood.? Dead Rhetoric?s awesome review includes, ?Claustrophobic material that still maintains a bizarre wondrousness to it ? you can be flattened by a wall of riffs and growls one moment and then drawn into an uneasy atmosphere the next. It all manifests to be an experience that is more than the sum of its parts, and Shrines of Paralysis is guaranteed to please all those looking for death metal with plenty of density and depth.?

Following several high-profile shows in their native country, ULCERATE?s headlining North American tour with Icelandic dissonance-mongers Zhrine and Montreal death metal quartet Phobocosm begins next week on the West Coast. The tour begins next Wednesday, November 2nd in Los Angeles, and bulldozes its way through the continent for virtually the entire month, the final show hitting Brooklyn on November 29th.

GOROD: Tech Death Strategists Issue “The Mystic Triad Of Artistry” Video

Last year, French tech death strategists GOROD unleashed the brain-melting bounty of their A Maze Of Recycled Creeds full-length in North America via Unique Leader Records. Centered around unfathomable fantasies created by various secret societies and mystical orders, the critically-adored A Maze Of Recycled Creeds is a near-fifty-minute-long work of diabolic genius spewing forth eleven tracks of arthritis-inducing riffs, spiraling, harmony-rich fret decompositions, surgically-precise time shifts, blasts, brawn and an incessant barrage of malicious vocal onslaughts.

To remind you just how crushing that record is, the band recently issued the visual companion to “The Mystic Triad Of Artistry.” The confounding clips was directed, shot, and edited by Gautier Roscoet (Hardpork and dR Media) with lighting by William Latour and is currently playing at Metal Injection issuing, “Remember the old character selection screens from basically any side-scrolling fighter game that even remotely resembled Mortal Kombat? GOROD’s video for ‘The Mystic Triad Of Artistry’ reminds me a lot of that, though with a lot of switching off and odd stage presences… it’s weird.”

“…the band’s highly diverse mix of influences – and their boundless ability to combine all of them together this succinctly – makes for an incredible listening experience, and one not to be missed by any fan of tastefully written heavy music.” – Heavy Blog Is Heavy

“…in lesser hands, this mixing of jazz/funk/prog/fusion/metal would likely end up as an unlistenable mess, but you only have to look to the weirdly infectious, stop-motion fretwork of ‘An Order To Reclaim’ – which concludes with an audaciously epic, funk-doom outro – to see the Frenchmen make it look almost effortless.” – No Clean Singing

“GOROD are simply turning the genre on its head while delivering one of the year’s very best and entertaining albums.” – Teeth Of The Divine

“GOROD continues to evolve and progress while others are content to ride their coattails…. one of the year’s strongest tech death offerings.” – Dead Rhetoric

“If Animals As Leaders or Felix Martin decided that they wanted to be a band like Metallica…it might come out like this.” – Glacially Musical

What an awesome festival with over 50,000 in attendance and sold out both days!
Let’s keep it simple
Day One – If you got there early enough to see THE SHRINE, you got an early morning treat. But things really got going when the Bay Area’s own DEATH ANGEL hit the Capital Stage and delivered the goods creating pits and winning over the younger crowd. BARONNESS did impress on the Monster Energy Stage giving album like quality sound and vocals to tracks like Shock Me. ANTHRAX proved their worth by giving a 6-song set that really lifted the crowd to the next level. THE PRETTY RECKLESS did more than impress as their albums are very tame sounding but the energy is up a level live. MESHUGGAH was a surprise when I noticed the crowd reaction and chanting for their math metal which can be hard to interpret. PRIMUS opened Those Damn Blue Collared Tweakers which had the crowd going strong and even a crowd surfer in a wheelchair. What can be said about SLAYER that hasn’t already been said as to this day they remain the tightest band live in their genre. As for TOOL, I like the albums, love the dynamics, but live I am not a fan of a singer that hides behind a drum kit. That comment will offend the diehards, but I am entitled to it but to the masses they purely delighted the crowd with their songs and lighting show.

Day Two – I do believe the WHITECHAPEL should have played after SUICIDE SILENCE, but so be it but both bands delivered their brand of extreme music to a very enthusiastic fanbase on the Capital Stage. Getting to speak with Whitechapel frontman Phil Bozeman after their set it was his 2nd set in 12 hours so big props to him for having that in him to deliver so strong! GHOST at 3:05 in the afternoon seems absurd but the crowd absolutely loved them as did I. Although a short 5-song set, they sounded incredible and look forward to their next trip through town. ZAKK SABBATH had the crowd from the first note and their energy carried the crowd until DISTURBED took the Monster Energy Stage. By crowd response alone, Disturbed should have headlined this day as the crowd was rabid as was the crowd for KORN. I kind of felt bad for AVENGED SEVENFOLD who played well, but the energy of the crowd had been spent on Korn and Disturbed, but A7X always delivers live.

SACRAMENTO, CA – October 22 – 23
While the AFTERSHOCK FESTIVAL is still happening, I thought this picture I took sums up the spirit, loyalty, respect, and camaraderie of those in the Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Community. I spoke with this guy after his 3rd time on the crowd and he was happy and grateful for how he was treated, even if his shorts nearly came off on the 3rd time when pulled over by Security!

More pics to come soon…
