Coachella May Move, Not Happen in 2014

Due to proposed hikes in taxes (a whopping 5-10% extra) on admissions fees to events with more than 2,500 attendees in the city of Indio, California, the 2013 Coachella festival could be the last of its kind before it heads elsewhere. If the initiative makes it onto the November ballot, organizers warn that they would move both Coachella and the Stagecoach music festival out of Indio, and possibly out of the Coachella Valley entirely.
Ticket prices for Coachella 2013 have already jumped by $34 to a total of $349 for next year’s festival; a portion of that increase, $2.33 per ticket, has been allocated specifically for the City of Indio. There’s an estimation that the proposed tax would amount to only about $18 extra per ticket, which would go toward balancing the city’s books after recent budget cuts.
Neighboring La Quinta and Riverside County are ready and willing to welcome the annual Coachella Festival if they do indeed choose to move.
