Mike Portnoy Quits Dream Theater…for Avenged Sevenfold?

In the wake of Mike Portnoy’s announcement that he is leaving DREAM THEATER, the remaining members of the band have issued the following statement about the matter. “To all of our loyal fans and friends: It is with profound sadness — regret — we announce that Mike Portnoy, our lifelong drummer and friend, has decided to leave Dream Theater. Mike’s stature in the band has meant the world to all of us professionally, musically, and personally over the years. There is no dispute: Mike has been a major force within this band.
While it is true that Mike is choosing to pursue other ventures and challenges, we can assure you that Dream Theater will continue to move forward with the same intensity — and in the same musical tradition — that you have all helped make so successful, and which is truly gratifying to us. Fans and friends: File this episode under Black Clouds and Silver Linings. As planned, we begin recording our newest album in January 2011, and we’ll follow that with a full-on world tour. “The Spirit Carries On.”

Mike Portnoy’s comments, which were put out yesterday on other music news sites, had him saying that all he wanted was for the band to take a break.
His statement was that working with other projects made him realize that Dream Theatre needed to slow down for a while, because things had become such a burden. The rest of the band disagreed, and chose instead to carry on without him.
I’m very much surprised that this site hadn’t covered his statement, which came out yesterday as opposed to the rest of the band’s statement today.
Portnoy in NO WAY quit Dream Theater to pursue other projects, and most certainly didn’t choose Avenged Sevenfold over DT!
The main force I thing opposing him was Petrucci. Who else could it have been?
I don’t think the Avenged Sevenfold was a good idea from the beginning but they (Dream Theater) are bound to lose a ton of fans for this. Mike was very friendly with the fans and was always more open than the other DT members. Had he been allowed to stay, they’re fan base would have continued to grow but then you’d have all the old school fans get turned off saying they “sold out”.
I wonder if this same thing could happen to Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Matt Cameron. Supposedly he’s made Pearl Jam the bigger priority and Soundgarden will come second. They denied a reunion last year and it happened anyway. Pearl Jam’s last album was only 40 minutes long and there have been rumors of them breaking up since as recently as 2007 due to Vedder’s solo career. Cameron also looked happier on stage with Soundgarden in Chicago then he did playing any shows with Pearl Jam. Finally, Pearl Jam were supposed to release an EP of studio outtakes but suddenly those plans have been shelved. This was as recent as May 2010 and then just this past month one of the members denied it was even happening. Lots of suspicious goings on and I won’t be surprised if Matt Cameron leaves Soundgarden very soon if they get a record deal like Alice In Chains did.
mike portony IS dream theater. His playing might be replicated but he basically ran the band, and just thinking about their live show with his absence just makes me wanna vomit.

Some people need to chill. He did not want to quit DT he wanted a break but the rest of the band wanted to move on without him so it’s technically partly their fault he is leaving. Anyway but people want to blame avenged sevenfold and its not like they told him to do it, and if he did want a break to spend more time with avenged then that’s his decision so don’t lash out at A7X. You can’t blame the man for wanting a break and wanting to do other thing’s with other bands after 25 years of dream theater.
Not to mention he had to do everything for dream theater while in avenged all he has to do is sit back and play drums show after show and does not have to get involved in other stuff. He is getting old and old people like things easier.
Dream Theater is way way way way way way way more talented than A7X Mike Shadows Sucks Johnny Crist is Alright, Rhythem Guitarist sucks, Gates is Awsome, Hopefully Mike will not pick a gay name like the others and hopefully he will make there music better overall.

I agree entirely with Anthony about the matter. People, Portnoy is his own person and he can do what ever the hell he wants. Yes he will be missed greatly and I was pissed on hearing what happened but got over it. In the interviews that I read from Portnoy, he is not quiting DT, he is only taking a break to keep a healthy relationship with the band. As the “boss” of the band and running the ship, Portnoy was afraid that his OCD was gonna cuz a major dilemma with the band so he took a break. Portnoy saw that A7X was perfect, and he was honored to drum for them. So everyone quit freakin out!!!! Jesus…. The man is only drumming as a temp for a little while until they get a new drummer. He will soon be back with DT so dont worry Portnoy fans!!!
If I were mike I would go with Avenged too,. Young guys that are making it huge right now.. The money is there, im sure even more girls are throwing themselves at him, hes probably having a blast with them making more money and playing good music . Ya DT is amazing tho

He’ll come back, but I wouldn’t if the fuckers treat me like that. If He wants to play with avenged sevenfold, then let him. Avenged is making it . As an Avid fan of both, I don’t care what Mike does. As long as he doesn’t stop playing. You should be fucking greatful he hasn’t fucked off and left you all. You cant blame him for making the desision to leave. It’s been 25 glorious years with DT and You can’t blame him for wanting a break away from that. End of. It’s his decision and It’s upsetting him how everyone’s taking it. If You were his fans, You wouldn’t take this as some of you are.
