Bush Signs Controversial Anti-Piracy Law
With the economy in shambles and banks being bailed out to the tune of billions of dollars, what does the United States need? That’s right – tougher piracy laws! Rising gas prices, world hunger, wars abroad, and now, the all important item to tackle…15 year old kids ripping MP3’s. It is, of course, RIAA supported. The most laughable piece comes from the newly created position, labeled an “intellectual property czar”, who will report directly to the President as part of a new executive office of government – the Office of the United States Intellectual Property Enforcement Representative. Classy.
According to Reuters, President George W. Bush signed into law on Monday a “controversial bill that would stiffen penalties for movie and music piracy at the federal level.”
Here are the key points that SMN extrapolated:
- The law toughens criminal laws against piracy and counterfeiting.
- The Recording Industry Association of America and Motion Picture Association of America backed the bill, as did the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
- It is called the PRO-IP Act
- The ‘czar’ position will not be filled before Bush leaves office. Gee, thanks.
- Preliminary punishments involve seizing of pirated copies and the device on which the copies are stored. Hefty fines may also follow.
The PRO-IP act was originally signed off on by the House of Representatives on May 8. It is now law thanks to George’s signature.
This man brought it to the table on December 5 of 2007 by this chap, John Conyers – the 2nd longest serving member of the House. A Democrat none the less:

what a pile of shit.
thos bastards
What do you mean A DEMOCRAT nonetheless? A Repbulican president signed it in. So… what are you saying exactly?
we all know money rules washington and the RIAA has got a shit ton of it…but they always want more, thus this pile of bureaucratic fungus called a bill. I hope some senator’s son or daughter gets busted under this law. Just another weapon of mass distraction.
You can have this iPod when you pry it from my cold dead hands….
good thing I only listen to music the RIAA doesn’t care about…
The government is dreaming. The Government is stupid. The Government of out of touch with reality. It is no longer possible to stop people from sharing music.
good thing I only listen to music the RIAA doesn’t care about…
good thing I only listen to music the RIAA doesn’t care about….
he looks like a kind guy
*yawn*
This will be increasingly difficult to track and enforce as technology advances. File sharing isn’t going anywhere. Unfortunately the government can’t grasp that concept.
partyvan needs to make this guy’s life hell
Us black metal fans are in good shape, seeing as we have the spawn of satan as our current president. He’d never take away our shit.
“good thing I only listen to music the RIAA doesn’t care about….”
+1
I have never ripped a cd. I’ll copy them from friends if Im short on cash. But if I like a band, I will support them or thier label by picking up thier shit.
Not stealing it.
So fuck all you trailer trash pussies that rip music.
SIN why the fuck do you try? We all know you’re british (and a racist), so go back to your own fucking country and quit trying to play the political game. You’re not intelligent enough to do so, thanks in advance.
PS. Phil Anselmo is a stupid faggot too. We can only hope he dies next.
the fuck does music pirating have to do with phil anselmo?
Well, he’s the scum of the earth. That warrants a good insult every now and then,
This is turrible. Just turrible.
lol @ ‘turrible’
Is it true that bit torrents cannot be tracked because of the nature of that technology? Is only P2P in question here? Does anyone actually use that piece of crap spamware that gripped the world called Kazaa? I remember when it was morpheus lol
torrents rule
lmao
‘Is it true that bit torrents cannot be tracked because of the nature of that technology?’
it is the nature of that technology that every person you connect to has your IP address lol
and theres plenty of fake/spam torrents too
Unlike Kazaa, Morpheus was on the FastTrack network and worked very well til it was shut down
i hope this clears things up for you ‘devlinv6′ haha
THAT IS ALL
I think back in the day we had a saying for what just happened… what was it again?…. oh yeah! OWNED!
They are just retarded if they think that industries are losing money because of pirating. Those people who pirate things would not have ever bought them in the first place anyway.
Famous bands or hit movies won’t lose money because people are ripping their shit, and its not technically stealing either. If anything they will just become more popular and well known because of the material being distributed and fans/people with money will ALWAYS buy it no matter what.
If anything, they are losing and wasting money now by imposing these ridiculous laws. This will in no way aid the financial crisis or improve the state of the economy.
what the fuck dose this all even mean!!!! are you telling me this ass clown cock sucker for a president is going to take my ipod away from me for real or fine me for having a such thing?!? when the fuck did music stop being about the music. and i agree phil is a piece of shit hes the reason dimes dead no if ans or butts…yep im a prick
Shit…. better delete that Pink Floyd boxset I just downloaded from a torrent site. In flac format I might add, got it’s great!!
meant to say “god” not “got”. hahaha I just remembered morpheus, those were the days. Thanks for the nostalgia.
