“Guttural vocals,” how low should they go? We’ve had some inhumanly low-pitched frontmen in death metal’s three decade history. Bill Steer of Carcass had a uniquely low toned style that he couldn’t even pull off in the live arena. Some of the other bands that employed singers who went with the guttural vocals include Pyrexia (their first singer, Darryl Wagner was fanFUCKINGtastic!), Rottrevore, and Gut. But Antti Boman of Finland greats, Demilich takes the crown. Upon hearing their 1991 demo, many underground tape traders (including myself) thought the Boman was using some kind of pitchshifting device to alter his vocals. He supposedly didn’t and whatever the case was, legions of would-be death and grindcore bands started adopting the extremely low-pitched vocal style Boman and the other aforementioned singers favored.
This brings us to New York porn-bizarro-grinders, Copremesis. The vocal work on their recently released, Muay Thai Ladyboys is so goddamned guttural, I don’t think they even qualify as death metal! I don’t mean this as a compliment in any stretch of the imagination. I’ve see the words “vomit” and “pig squeal” used to describe this kind of bellowing and THAT doesn’t even get close to labeling this nonsense! The riffing and arrangement style is definitely the kind of by-the numbers, lo-fi grind littering the underground right now. Not a single track or for that matter, section, stand out on this debut offering. So if you’re in the mood for bile-laced growling, you’re best bet is sticking with people like Frank Mullen for now.
