Rock Drummers ‘Are Top Athletes’

Playing the drums for a rock band requires the stamina of a Premiership footballer (soccer to Yanks), research suggests. It’s touted that blasting through a 90 minute set can elevate heart rates up to 190 beats per minute…and that’s for the drummer of BLONDIE.

In a recent VO-2 test, it was found that Clem Burke (drummer of the above mentioned band), during a performance, his heart averaged between 140 and 150 beats a minute, peaking at 190, levels comparable to other top athletes.

The research also implies drummers burn 4-600 calories per hour…something to offset the vices of being ‘on tour’ I suppose?

So, even if you are a trivial opening act with a 25 minute set, as a drummer, things aren’t all that bad. Check the full article out, plus a video, at the BBC.
