Black Tide - Alex Nunez, Guitars

March 18th, 2008, 9:36 pm

Black Tide’s path to success could have been lifted off a Hollywood script. The metal combo, made up of 4 Florida based teenagers, starting gigging locally under the name Radio just a few years ago. Lead singer and guitarist, Gabriel Garcia was all of …… at the time! They quickly garnered raves from the local metal scene and Atlantic Records jumped onboard. When things started to go sour with that union, the band found themselves being courted by several indie and major labels. Eventually they signed with Interscope Records who put them in the studio with Johnny K. who has produced the likes of Machine Head and Disturbed. Their debut album, Light From Above is in stores this week and features their omnipresent single, “Shockwave.” Fans of Metallica, Skid Row and Savatage should definitely check this one out. SMN News talked to Black Tide guitarist, Alex Nunez about the band’s new album.

On Light From Above you touch successfully incorporate elements of power metal, thrash and even melodic hard rock. Is it safe to say that your metal tastes are varied?

Definitely varied, we are all into pretty different types of music and genres. Rock, thrash, punk, classic-rock, country…you name it!

I noticed Jason Suecof (producer of Trivium and Devildriver) gets some writing credits on the album. How does he fit into the picture?

When we got a demo deal with Atlantic, he is who they picked to record our demo. So after that, we kept a relationship going and did some more stuff with him later on.

Most bands in your situation start on an indie metal label. Were you weary of signing with a goliath like Interscope Records?

I didn’t even know who they were at first, but it was a little nuts when we heard everything they had to say and all the things they had planned for us. We’re really happy with what they’ve done so far.

You recently filmed a video for “Shockwave” in California with the Metal Mulisha guys. How did you hook up with them and how did the shoot go?

We found out about them through our management, and they used to send us clothes all the time. When the time came for the video they were down to do it. We love them and support everything they do!

Did you notice that certain songs went over better with the European crowds on the tour you did with Avenged Sevenfold?

I wouldn’t say certain songs went differently, it was more like they reacted differently to set overall, rather then just one song. Although, it was all in a good way and the shows were great.

Enterprise” has some really piercing lyrics. Can you talk about the inspiration behind that one?

Our singer wrote the lyrics so that’s all him but most of the lyrics can probably be interpreted in different ways.

Congrats on the album! I noticed you have been getting a lot of online press. What is the best way fans can keep up with you?

Myspace! We check it every day and try to keep every one posted with as much as we can, so that’s probably the best way to keep tabs on whats going on with us

Black Tide’s path to success was paved by and made possible by their “REAL” manager Chris Andrews. Alex Nunez owes his music career to him. Too bad they fucked him over and sold him out. This band is sorrounded by pieces of shit….I take that back. Gabriel (singer) is sorrunded by pieces of shit.
