With MINISTRY’s long and drug-addled career coming to a close after the band’s upcoming tour, they have released Cover Up which finds them, and some guest musicians, interpreting material that you wouldn’t normally associate with the band. Things get off to a strong start with the Burton C. Bell (Fear Factory) fronted version of “Under My Thumb.” His commanding vocal presence perfectly captures the lyric’s dark and misogynistic sentiment. Hopefully Bell joins the band on stage when they play this on their upcoming farewell tour. Revolting Cocks member, Josh Bradford sings on a couple of cuts and his cock-rock wail on Golden Earring’s FM radio staple, “Radar Love,” is a standout. While the drums are programmed on the entire album, the superb mix John Bilberry really keeps them from coming off as lifeless. 

Prong mastermind, Tommy Victor’s appearance on the Mountain riff-rock classic, “Mississippi Queen,” and “Space Truckin,” from Deep Purple, really threw me for a loop! I’ve never heard him sound so soulful. The guy does a mean Ian Gillan! To help round things out, Ministry CEO, Al Jourgensen includes some 1000 Homo DJs (one of his many side-projects) and older cover b-sides. The version of Black Sabbath’s “Supernaut” is worth the price of admission alone. Cover Up closes out with Ministry’s take on “What a Wonderful World.” Jourgensen really outdoes himself on this one. The lush string arrangement, melodious harpsichords and overall Tim Burton-esque feel help bring this classic into a new light; albeit, a stranger one.
