Nasum - Doombringer

After the tragic passing of founding member, Mieszko Talarczyk, in 2004, long running Swedish grinders, Nasum decided to dissolve the band. The folks at Relapse Records posthumously released Grind Finale which gathered all of the band’s non-album material on 2-CD set. The label’s founder, Matt Jakobson, went through the band’s archives and found a treasure in the form of a full-live set recorded on Nasum’s 2004 tour of Japan. Doombringer is a 25 minute set that finds the unit firing on all cylinders. Trying to record a project with this much velocity can be quite the task but the audio quality perfectly captures the essence of the band’s blend of new and old-school grind.

Mining from influences such as Agathocles, Napalm Death, and Assuck, Nasum always infused their grind with enough songwriting dynamics to put them in a league all to themselves. Doombringer opens with the tornado blasting of “Corrosion” quickly sets the tone and the disc never takes a breather from there! The push-and-pull stomp of “Inhale/Exhale” makes an appearance early in and never sounded more punishing that it does here. Talarczyk’s vocals shred away in a banshee-like wail almost non-stop but they remain consistently powerful through the set’s duration. Listening to this stellar collection, one can’t wonder what this incredible band would have gone on to do.
