Godsmack’s Sully Erna Plots ‘Exotic’ Solo Album

As his bandmates busy themselves with the side band ANOTHER ANIMAL, GODSMACK frontman Sully Erna is plotting his first solo album, which he hopes to begin recording in the spring.

“It’s gonna be nothing like rock music,” Erna tells Billboard.com. “It’s gonna be very Native American tribal rhythms mixed with these Middle Eastern bluesy kind of vocals. This is a project to get a different kind of music out of me that I feel is inside me. .. and not for any expectations about how big the hit may be or if it’s gonna make it on the radio.”

Erna plans to work with singer Lisa Guyer, who was featured on the “Godsmack IV” track “Hollow,” as well as a number of other musicians.

“I’m not setting any time limits on it,” Erna says. “We’re kind of baby stages in the writing process. But it’ll be good. It’ll be fun, and it’s gonna be different. I don’t know if it’ll be something the real hard rockers out there dig, but anybody who enjoyed the acoustic EP or ‘Voodoo’ or ‘Serenity’ I think will enjoy this stuff ’cause it’s very cool and hypnotic and kind of exotic.”

Meanwhile, the new GODSMACK compilation “Good Times, Bad Times…Ten Years of Godsmack” — which includes a newly recorded cover of the LED ZEPPELIN song of the same name and is packaged with a live acoustic DVD — is designed as a stop-gap while the bandis on hiatus. Erna says he’s not at all concerned the break will become permanent, however.

“The band’s in great shape,” he says. “We’re getting along wonderfully, and there’s no problems whatsoever. We all know this is an entity we can’t just shut down; it’s gonna continue to go, and everybody’s just kinda doing something on the side that’s…a little different than what we’d do from GODSMACK.”

And having those outlets, Erna adds, will allow GODSMACK to be more focused on its next outing. “Over the years we’ve realized that GODSMACK just needs to be … a big, fat, powerhouse rock band,” he explains, “and I think because of that we’ve left some of these experimental things to some side projects. And when we do come out and do another GODSMACK record, it’s gonna be a monster.”

Godsmack is awesome, but this solo cd doesn’t sound interesting.

Wow, FRED DURST!!!!!! An old idol of mine….
When are we going to hear new stuff from you???
Anyway, Godsmack truly is an amazing outfit. But I can see how Sully just wants to weave his magic in different ways. He’s multidimensional. That’s just not something you see now adays. He has vision and the tools to make ALL of his dreams come true…And on a higher level, setting an example for all of us. He’s a true leader. And courageous for following his own path. He has no fear.
Another Animal should be commended for wanting to branch off. They didn’t fall apart when Sully decided he needed time off. They “moved on” in a peaceful manner. No drama. How often does that happen?
I am continually amazed and inspired by the whole crew. I mean, with these guys, the possibilities are endless. Mostly, they are dedicated to their fans.
Alot of bands out there take the cash and run, not realizing that someone might have spent the rent money to buy tickets to see someone perform. Not Godsmack. They make their fans their family. And call the Asshole’s as they see them.

P.S. It was a pleasure to share the same page, and a few thoughts with you, Fred. It reminds me of the song REARRANGED……which is one of my all time favorites, ironically posted on my MYSPACE….
