Opiate for the Masses - Manifesto

Nights Like These - Billy Bottom, Vocals

October 16th, 2007, 12:03 am

For those not yet familiar with Nights Like These, describe the band in one sentence.

Heavy, stoned out riffs and enough aggression to rip someone’s face off, while coming full circle with unique psychedelic songwriting.

You have a new album coming out on October 16th called Sunlight At Secondhand. What was the writing/recording process like this time?

We toured for a year and a half off our old album and realized this was not the direction we wanted this band to go. We took the summer off, wrote a bunch of songs and this is how it came out.

I noticed that you felt the need to explain the direction of the album on the band’s MySpace page? Have you been catching a lot of shit from some of the more closed minded fans?

We had been receiving negative emails and comments on our page from younger fans who don’t get what we are doing. It gets to the point where I want to write them all back and smack the fuck out of them but in the end I shouldn’t really care. We are doing this for ourselves and I thought that if I left a little blog that it might help people understand why we are doing what we are doing.

How do you feel about people “illegally” downloading the new album?

I don’t endorse anything illegal but if you download it, I could care less. I just want people to hear our music and spread the word.

Would you beat up Look What I Did to claim ultimate Tennessee dominance?

I am not familiar with that band. That should say something.

What’s the TN scene like? Is it hard for metal bands to gain local support?

I can’t speak for all of TN, but where we are from (Memphis) its a little odd. Kids come and go so it’s hard to keep a steady fan base flowing. We surprisingly still draw kids but most of the time, shows that come through are hit or miss. I have been involved with the scene for some time now and Memphis has had a ton of great bands start there in all different styles.

Have you ever seen anyone from The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza naked?

Gross.

How has touring with Bury Your Dead gone?

Fantastic. Those guys are awesome. And even though our material doesn’t really fit the crowd we play to every night, the exposure is great and we all get along. This has been the best tour we have ever done. Shout outs to Bring Me the Horizon and Ion Dissonance as well!

Have you ever hit on a chick at a show and it turned out to be a guy?

Definitely not.

Are there any other upcoming tour plans in the works?

Yea but its all up in the air, so anything I could say might change tomorrow.

What’s the first thing you usually do when you get home from a tour?

Sleep.

Have you ever looked at the Victory Records lineup and secretly felt a little ashamed?

Hahaha…..

How do you respond to people who might write you off as “just another metalcore band”?

“Are you fucking retarded?” that’s all.

The music industry seems to be putting a lot of emphasis on a band’s MySpace status, with bands getting signed based on how many “friends” they have, or how many plays they get per day. Do you see this as having a negative impact on the scene’s integrity or as a way for band’s to easily get attention?

It’s for real fucking annoying. We are not an internet band so we get dismissed a lot because our myspace page isn’t causing glitches because we have so many friends. I think it’s a great way for fans to stay personal with bands they like and for fans to hear music. But to base how good a band is off of plays or # of friends is ridiculous. I mean, sure, it helps labels/agents to find out who they can next exploit and ruin to make a quick buck, but in the end, I see Myspace as only a tool and minor role in the big scheme of things.

Would you ever consider hacking into The Faceless‘ MySpace page and turning it into a Nights Like These page?

Definitely not, those guys are cool dudes, we have done a few dates with them, but Id rather hack a bigger band if I’m gonna go all the way. JOKE.

Are you guys going to try getting on Ozzfest or Sounds of the Underground next Summer?
I think Ozzfest is going down, so maybe Sounds would be fun.

What are you listening to lately, or are there any bands you think people need to know about?
Torche, Giant, Burn Baby Burn, Cursed, Baroness

Any final words for our readers?
