Five Finger Death Punch – The Way Of The Fist
For the past decade, The Firm has been giving us many different forms of entertainment through country music, rock, pop, and even in movies. This time around they are granting us the machine known as FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH. 5FDP is a band composed of former members of MOTOGRATER, UPO, and W.A.S.P. that delivers a sound that is nothing new to our ears and while they may claim to be “metal” and give a shout out to “Every true metal head that never sold out,” I find that The Way Of The Fist falls short of the bands goals.
Tracks like, White Knuckles, and The Way Of The Fist sound nothing more than a B-Side from SLIPKNOT as all we’d need is some extra people on stage running around with the band. The vocals are run of the mill barking into clean patches that run the typical course of music today and the lyrics are pretty consistent on the album with recurring themes as you can decipher from the titles of the songs. Some of the lyrics you have heard time and time again in heavy music (i.e. “Everything I touch turns to ashes,” “1, 2, Fuck You,” and “I’m dead inside.”) Some of the production on the album doesn’t fit their sound especially in the song A Place To Die as the intro has so much effect on the lead guitars that they don’t even sound like the same band and this runs common on all leads on the album. We also have songs like Salvation and Meet The Monster which sound like the band was emulating PRONG and even STATIC-X. While I see many downpoints on this album there is a saving grace in the first single, The Bleeding in which the radio edit of the song is stronger than the album version but the verses and pre-choruses bear a striking element of BREAKING BENJAMIN.
As musicians the band is not talentless, but I’m not being served anything new that hasn’t been done before. I’m not sure what the public’s perception will be of 5FDP, but what I hear is a band that would have better fit onto the 2nd stage of OZZFEST 2001 than a band emerging in 2007.

i’d give it a 7/10.
the production definitely doesn’t seem right and it’s obviously not original, but it’s quite a good balance between heavy and melodic…and if you loved any of the bands on the second stage of ozzfest 2001, you’d definitely like this.
this album was a pretty big letdown, considering that i was a fan of motograter, and this is essentially the entire band under a new name.
Essentially the entire band under a new name? The only one that is from Motograter is Ivan, the singer.
I got this CD two days ago and it’s one of my favorite albums ever. I’m a proud Knucklehead! Also, I’m a huge Slipknot fan too and I don’t really hear any Slipknot in their music. The Prong and Static X reference is downright ridiculous! It’s almost like we are not even talking about the same band?? To me they sound like a Swedish Pantera with a more versatile singer. 9/10 any day.
I thought this album was better than a 5/10. I would give it a 7/10. I agree that there is nothing new in this album as I have heard it all before. This band has a nice sound to it as they seem to combine many elements of metal but mainly stick to nu-metal. I find nothing wrong with this as I was born into nu-metal. Without nu-metal, I would have never discovered other great bands like Celtic Frost, Nevermore, Unearth, etc.
Even though there isn’t anything original on this album, I still found it enjoyable. I thought it was better than other releases that came out earlier this year.
oh wow, i was misinformed. my friend made me a copy of this cd and said it was motograter under a new name. what are the rest of them doing then?
This has to be one of the worst reviews I have ever read, the ONLY they got correct was the production comments. This band is one of the freshest sounding bands out there right now. I never have been to this sight before reading this and from the looks of it I won’t be back. I find it funny you give Droid an 8/10, talk about a band that delivers a sound that is nothing new.
Go see them live; they were one of the best performers at Family Values this year.
Ivan Moody (vox) from ffdp and motograter also has another project with 2 other motograter members, that band is called Ghost Machine. They teamed up with John Stevens, an XM radio producer whom they met while motograter performed live on an XM channel. That band is pretty fucking cool, I’d recommend it to anyone, other than the douchebag who wrote this review.
I heard this cd and broke out laughing… “You dont understand me.. And you probably never will!!” BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
hahahahahahahha!!!! The reviewer is a retard!
So finally I got to see these guys. I have to throw in another 2 cents here. These guys are unbelievable. The reviewer doesn’t know jack shit about true metal , and it seems like a whole arena agrees!
Check this out ya’ knob:

I wouldn’t use a Slipknot comparison by any means. When I first heard Motograter, I listened to it repeatedly until I basically got sick of it. I can see the same thing happening with 5FDP. I’ve been listening to this album on loop for the last week or so because it is refreshing and gives me the same feel I had when Motograter was released. However, the technical aspects of the music is pretty simplistic and so are the lyrics but its something new to listen to and I am enjoying it right now. Like the Motograter album, everysong is pretty decent but the album overall is pretty short. I will continue to enjoy this album until it becomes played out in my head.
Nothing really new here but if you liked Motograter, you’ll love 5FDP.
yeah, the reviewer doesn’t know jack shit about “true metal” because he gave a nu-metal CD a bad review. spectacular reasoning! :|
There’s nothing Nu about this, nearly every song has a solo and competent riffing, a trait that is distinctly NOT Nu metal.
Either way, this is great for someone looking for a band more focused on making the music fun to listen to rather than show off for 45 minutes of eccessive riffing. Anathema this is not, but that doesn’t mean you cant enjoy it. 7.5 out of 10 for me.
BTW, i bet this band transitions live better than almost any other out there, looking forward to mayhem festival at DTE :)
caught up in orginallity and genre representation. the reviewer has forgetten the most important thing…does it sound good?
As a metal fan you should find this album an excellent listen.
I recommend it.
Motograter is one of my favorite bands and when I found out about the album I went nuts. I’ve listens to the entire cd, front to back, including the bonus tracks, everyday since June. I saw them live,I got the tee-shirt, and sing the songs in my head. The album may not be original by that doesn’t mean it isn’t amazing… This is my favorite album of the past two years… I like It more than I destructable and all hope is gone. 9.5/10
Are you all kidding me? This is awful, awful music.
5 finger cock punch is NOT metal. The riffs are weak, the vocals are laughable. Go listen to some Bodom, TBDM, Necrophagist, The Absence, Into Eternity, really anything but this. That is “real” metal. This most certainly is NU metal; something that doesn’t deserve to have metal in the title. I looked up reviews for this thinking that everyone had to think this band was a joke. The singer looks like the guy from crazy town and just punches the air and tries to look intimidating while singing about how he’ll knock you out.
I agree with the reviewer for the most part; though the score was far too high. 0/10 is better for this crap.
He is right though; this band belongs on the second stage at ozzfest 2000 rather than the metal scene of now. What a joke of a band. If you actually like this crap; you, too are a joke.
