Two years have passed and on cycle DEVILDRIVER releases their third album, The Last Kind Words through Roadrunner. Devildriver will deliver exactly what we’ve come to expect from them which is upbeat, in your face metal but on a higher level this time around.
The difference this time around is the band has become slightly more extreme, yet has cultivated a stronger sense of melody in their chord progressions that are apparent in These Fighting Words and Clouds Over California. Guitarists Mike Spreitzer and Jeff Kendrick play off of each other on the next level with more frequent solos, melody interplay, layering of parts, and doubling each other’s riffs. There is more of a European influence as in Tirades Of Truth and in the intro to Horn Of Betrayal which lays way to a standard Devildriver verse that is driven by John Boecklin’s drumming which is never too much, but always just enough. Devildriver shows us some of their sludge influence with Monsters Of The Deep which has an almost CROWBAR appeal if Kirk and crew were more straight forward. You will also hear some PANTERA influence in the riff styling and effects with When Summoned. Another standout track is Head On To Heartache which has some great open riffing that is driving yet the song opens wide when the guitar team launches their attack with the solos.
All bands will always say that their newest record is their best to date, but it’s rare that their statement will ring true when all is said and done. Sometimes bands spend too much time in the studio picking apart their songs, but Devildriver spent only a month recording and there is a sense of immediacy that is delivered to the ears. Maybe with album number three Devildriver can continue to convert those naysayers into believers.

bad_craziness is just jealous. This is yet another great album from a great band. Much better than Coal Chamber and DevilDriver continue to deliver with every live performance. Too bad they joined Ozzfest 2007 after it hit my city.

Jason Suecof and Mark Lewis of Audiohammer Studios rule…those guys consistently make great sounding records. Congratulations to Devildriver for such a furiously creative slab of heavy, intense music.
