The same reason Daughtry is considered a rock band…people are sheep.

JFaC’s new album is very average death metal stuff :/

daughtry is rock…people being sheep have nothing to do with it. apparently you just can’t handle the fact that there are more genres of rock than just hard rock and metal.

…Daughtry is a little thing called “AOR”. Which is not rock. Listen, rock hasn’t been played on the radio, save the White Stripes or The Strokes a few years ago. Everything that’s played is “alternative”, “nu-metal”, or occasionally I think some “metalcore” in more open-minded markets.

People are sheep, but Daughtry is an extremely talented singer. JFAC sucks sheep balls.

All of which are sub-genres of genres that are sub-genres of rock music. Saying that alternative, nu-metal, and metalcore are not forms of rock is just ludicrous.

And I would definitely consider the white stripes and the strokes under the alternative category. As in, alternative ROCK.

Dude, I’d have to disagree. Not to get all hubrisitic, but despite what the radio and layouts in stores say, ROCK isn’t a catchall term for white rock guitar music.

Metalcore has nothing to do with rock at all. There’s not even a hint of ancestery musically. It’s a combination of extreme metal (metal and rock, as of the last 20 years, are completely different things…think Bathory versus T.Rex)

There’s nothing alternative about the Strokes or the White Stripes. White Stripes are indebted to 60’s rock (pure rock, that is) and the Stripes owe much to 70’s NYC rock. In fact, a large majority of “indie rock” are just pure rock bands, but ACTUAL ROCK BANDS, don’t sell. Nu-metal is definitely a subgenre of rock, but the tag “alternative” is just a catchall to describe rock bands without any inluence from the previous generations bands (i.e: Removal of ALL blues influence that started around 80’s hardcore punk) and maybe the addition some more esoteric ones (world music, electronica, hip-hop, ska, spanish music, etc).

But basically, in no way is Daughtry rock. If you listen to the Hellacopters, the Hives, the Kinks, AC/DC, Motorhead, and Eagles of Death Metal, then listen to Seether, Hinder, Daughtry, Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy, Three days Grace, Evanescence, etc, etc, you see the difference.

That is what I meant. Daughtry can be construed as a ‘good singer’ but there is no way that processed pop music can be passed off as Rock.

It doesn’t matter if you get Slash to write one of your riffs, he is a tame singer so he is easily ingestible by the teeny crowd. You would NEVER hear a 13 yr old girl listening to Motorhead, but I bet your weeks salary that 13 yr old girls are listening to Hinder/Daughtry/Evanescence. The reason is….they are safe and catchy.

if you’re also telling me that seether and three days grace are not forms of rock, you’re out of your fucking mind.

Horseshit, plain and simple. Metalcore comes from metal, and hardcore. Metal is a Direct dissendent of
rock. Metal came from Black Sabbath, who happened to be spawned by hard rock and blues. Hardcore has it’s roots in punk, which can be traced back to ROCK bands like the who. Even The Ramones and the Sex Pistols can be considered rock, especially if you consider the white stripes to be straight up rock.

Rock music describes pretty much every thing (outside of country western) that is driven by a guitar, bass and drums. Of course there’s a difference between AC/DC and Seether, but that doesn’t that they both can’t possibly be rock bands, that’s just absurd!

Also, history doesn’t cancel itself every 20 years. SO saying that metal and rock over the past 20 years are two different things doesn’t really mean much. Especially because it is not true anyway.

Rock is used to describe a wide range of music, kind of like rap or pop. They all have sub genres, and rock does more so that others. It is much more of a generalization than say, Metalcore, which is very specific.
