Andrew! How are you good sir?
I feel so good.
You’ve decided to take a bit of a detour from the musical side of things and are reliving your college days – but on the other side of the academic pulpit. How’s the speaking tour going?
I never went to college, so I’m not sure that I’m reliving anything. I’m living this for the first time - or perhaps I went to college in a past life. Either way, my life has felt very new to me, but familiar in terms of the good feelings I’ve had during recent experiences. Having the opportunity to speak and to listen has been part of my life for many years - as it has been for all of us. Having the opportunity to be heard is more recent, and I’m very grateful for this chance to communicate with people. I used to think interacting with people was sort of scary, but now it thrills me more than ever, especially when we’re discussing ideas that I’ve found exciting.
The point of the speaking tour and lecture performances is to expand the ways in which I can communicate, create, and receive good feelings and fun times. I’m adding this method to the music, and the entire range of possibility is expanding. So, doing lectures and seminars is just another way to party.
You’re releasing your 4th album “Young Lord” sometime this year, how do you feel about this album, and how does it compare to your previous discs?
It’s not done yet, so I don’t feel I can really comment on it. However, I’m extremely excited about the songs. There’s another album too, called “The Carrier”. And there’s an album of solo-piano that I’m working on, too. Plus a bunch of other material planned for release. There’s really more music going on then I ever was doing before. I’ve made an effort to expand it and it’s all coming up soon.
Please tell the masses the word ‘party’ appears at least once on this disc.
I don’t know what all the words are yet. But there’s a new song called “Big Party” on the vinyl version of “Close Calls With Brick Walls”, the 3rd album. It’s one of the 5 new bonus tracks. This vinyl version is coming out in the summer. I think it will be a very nice thing to have and hold.
Are there any messages that you’re trying to get across to your audience in your new album? Maybe…study, study, study?
My message has been relatively consistent in saying “Do what you want.” If someone wants to “study, study, study”, then they absolutely should, at least as far as I’m concerned, because I’m going to do what I want. In order for me to have that freedom, I extend it to everyone else, and I trust them. I have to - or I choose to.
You’re known as a major party animal, a God among men, the proverbial black penis among mere mortals like ourselves - how do you maintain such a title and image?
Others maintain this image for me. I can do nothing but bend to the imaginations and perceptions of others. Regardless of what I think of myself, others may think differently. I am their thoughts as much as they are mine. I’ve made an effort to bring good times and a love of fun to the world and the world has responded. For this, I am infinitely grateful.
How did you decide to mix so many different genres into one sound?
For me, it started with feelings and physical sensations, like running, or dancing, or flying down a roller coaster hill. What would the greatest night sound like, if it were a song? What would my greatest feeling sound like, if it were a song? This was the thinking that aided me in choosing the way to make and play this music.
Will we see Kelly Osbourne on any of these new albums?
I’m happy you asked about her. I was just thinking about all the great and wild times we had together. I don’t know if you’ll see her on any of these new albums.
Who are some of your greatest influences?
Mostly my friends from high school. I idolized many of the older kids - their lives and what they did with them inspired me to no end. I became friends with most of them eventually and continue to be creatively excited by all of them. I think they’ve all gone on to do amazing things.
Andrew…tell us a joke.
What do you call a hill-house roll? A round!
Has anyone ever attempted to call you ‘Andy’?
Sure, several of my friends have been calling me Andy for years.
Do you find ‘Carlos Mencia’ funny?
I’m familiar with his name and face, although I can’t recall seeing any of his performances. I look forward to the day I do, though.
There’s a lot of stuff out there music wise, what are you jamming at the moment?
Earlier today I was listening to the new album by Lee “Scratch” Perry. I met him a few days ago and had some wonderful conversations which we filmed for T.V. The new album is called “Panic In Babylon”.
What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you in the past…say…72 hours?
I thought about seeing a spider shoot out of a wall and into a corner, where it would just face the corner and not stir.
This may be a bit personal but, who are you voting for in 2008?
I don’t know.
What’s one of your biggest pet peeves?
To me, the answer is obvious: having pet peeves!
Last, but most definitely not least, for those who may not know, what does ‘WK’ stand for?
Wilkes-Krier
You’ve been a pleasure Andrew. Let me be the first to say, on behalf of SMNnews, I love you.
