30 Seconds to Mars – Unveil ‘From Yesterday’ Video Shot in People’s Republic of China

With their second album “A Beautiful Lie” nearing platinum status, Virgin Records’ 30 SECONDS TO MARS will unveil another career milestone with an epic and astonishing new music video for the album track From Yesterday,”  becoming the very first American rock video ever shot in its entirety in the People’s Republic of China.

“From Yesterday,” encompasses a complex story surrounding the history and culture of a multi-millennial period, while depicting fantasy, violence, and even sexual perversity.  Breaking new ground with both the location and in utilizing cutting edge technology by being one of the first videos ever presented in HD, the group visualized “From Yesterday” as a massive screen-scape shot in Super 35 film, finished in HD, and captured in 5.1 surround sound – all of which helped build on the mystery and surrealism of the song itself.

“I thought that shooting in China would be the perfect setting to explore the visual possibilities for this song. The depth of their history, the beauty of the culture and the passion of the people inspired a story that left us as a band changed forever,” said lead singer Jared Leto.

With a level of style and substance more along the line of short film than any typical music video, “From Yesterday” was directed by Bartholomew Cubbins, the press shy, reclusive director who also directed the much-honored previous 30 SECONDS TO MARS video, “The Kill.”

Shot in the Forbidden City and the Emperor Qin palace, “ambitious” only begins to describe the sheer scale of the production, which included hundreds of costumed extras and warriors in an elaborate set design inspired by the empires of ancient Chinese Dynasties, with classical Chinese opera, hundreds of flags, acrobats, swordsmen, martial artists, and even a massive show of fireworks arrayed in an eye-popping, breath-taking visual that is unforgettable.  Through a translator Cubbins had only this to say about the experience, “the condition of the prison I stay is atrocious….although the food is surprisingly good. I love eggroll. If anyone could contact the Danish embassy it would be appreciated… Tel # 51.25.33.27.6225. I not guilty.”

On Monday, November 20th at 10:00am, MTV2 will premiere 30 SECONDS TO MARS “Makes A Video” for “From Yesterday.”  They will also air the special extended version of the film immediately following the program.  Repeat airings will continue throughout the week.  You will also be able to see the full extended special version of the film on MTV.com, MTV2.com, and 30secondstomars.com.  Also that day, MTV2 will premiere the “Unleashed” world premiere of the video throughout the day and MTV will air the video in its “Primetime Premiere” special at 11:00pm.

“From Yesterday” follows one of the most-honored videos of 2006, “The Kill.” A No. 3 Modern Rock airplay hit, “The Kill” was nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards – Best Rock Video and the MTV2 Award. It won the MTV2 Award. FUSE named 30 SECONDS TO MARS lead singer Jared Leto “Prince of Darkness,” and honored “The Kill” as the Best Video Inspired By Film. It also won the mtvU Woodie Award for Best Video (Live Action).
