Ultra dark and ultra brooding, Celtic Frost’s “Monotheist” may not be a prog or mathrock band but there’s a slow burn, a sinking in, that occurs when listening to this disc. Thick, white hot slowgroove but heavy as fuck guitars, somber gothic melodies, roaring vocals with occasional change-ups and interlude moments of dark beauty. “Monotheist” proves through the course of its running time to be one of the year’s truly fine metal releases. So much talent and passion surges through the often-almost-doom metal proceedings that the listener is helpless but to be drawn in. Satisfying.
