All That Remains – The Fall of Ideals

Author: Kristofer Upjohn

All That Remains does the admirable thing. There are two different aesthetics at work here, and work together marvelously they do. On the one hand there is the brutal heavyness of extreme hardcore/thrash, the new ethic of metal. This side of the band hammers punishingly with percussion like speed rivets, bass and guitar licking out riffs with masterful ferocity and vocals roaring into your putrefied brain. But there’s also the side of the band that, while still very much metal, brings in a quite surprising amount of melodicism and, dare I say it, emotiveness. Here is a band whose from-the-heart speakings go beyond merely the inward anger and explore a wider gamut of human feeling, expressed by rip roaring metal that is alternately crushing and beautiful.
