Saxon – The Eagle Has Landed Part III

Author: Kristofer Upjohn

This will, I confess, be my first time hearing Saxon. I know some will consider this an oversight for someone who was banging his head all the way back in the late 80s (which was actually a late-ish start for listening to metal, which was nearing its end at that point, with Nirvana’s “Nevermind” just around the bend in 92). But I’ve always been a late bloomer. At any rate, here’s the facts: Saxon has issued a two-disc live set of recent performances (though I assume many of the songs are from back in the day) and given the breadth of “Part III’s” scope (i.e., there’s a shitload of tracks), this is probably an OK way to be introduced to the band. The one reservation I hold for that assertion is not the band’s onstage ability, which is more than competent, but to the sheer fact of the live production in this case. The brightness of the classic metal sound is a tad muted, even if it
does capture the live feel nicely. However, this is a live act, so production differences are to be expected. It’s NOT a studio disc but it DOES give newcomers to Saxon’s sound a chance to check ‘em out fully and gives old-time fans some new live shit to add to their collection.
