Hatesphere – The Sickness Within

Author: Kristofer Upjohn

Hatesphere is heavy, of course, and focuses most of its attention on that. But it doesn’t always have to be superfast whamma whamma bang bang thrash (though there’s plenty of that here, with ultraspeedy thrash grooves that would snap your neck mercilessly if you tried to keep up headbanging at full tempo for very long). At times the band shifts into mid-tempo but chunky and heavy passes to keep their death thrash moving. And, while I say death-thrash, you can almost feel a bit of a hardcore influence in the midst of the pummeling. The music is thoughtfully structured and, while crushing, not random or chaotic. I would have liked a bit more in the way of musicality to it, as sheer extreme metal without songwriting isn’t my favorite version of hard music, but the band is quite talented and there’s no shortage of energy and talent for metalheads.
