Overlorde – Return of the Snow Giant

Author: Kristofer Upjohn

Overlorde’s fan pleasing brand of metal should get fists in the air, waving imaginary swords (or maybe real ones, depending on how fanatical the listener is). Their solid brand of fantasy metal brings the listener into adventure-land with some solid licks and crunchy chops. And of interest to general non-power metal listeners, the PM vocals shoot for mid-range much of the time, occasionally hitting the classic wail to bring the zing to a passage. (I mention all this because the high vocals are the trouble for some who eschew power metal; however, even the wails work here, and besides, if you don’t like power metal, well…). The instrumentalists charge ahead with some well done headbanging grooves; use your other hand to hold up the horn fingers. And there’s also a flavor here that doesn’t sound as uber-teflon like much of today’s modern power metal, at least from Europe. This feels like European power metal the way it used to be.
