Sworn Enemy – The Beginning Of The End
Author: Mark Thompson
I have always been one to appreciate a bands ability to change, evolve, and add new elements to their own sound. AC/DC is pretty much the only band who was consistent album after album with a tried but true sound. SWORN ENEMY, whether on their own or becoming a victim to a growing trend of modern thrash, they manage to maintain a fresh delivery courtesy of producer Tim Lambesis on their Abacus release, The Beginning Of The End. Although Sal’s vocals are still Sal, there seems to be a stronger sense of importance to his approach. They have managed to add deeper elements of guitar playing (solos, dissonant melodies) and yet still maintain their identity.
Scared Of The Unknown and The Beginning Of The End both borrow riffs from SLAYER with the former taking heavily from Raining Blood. With that said, SWORN ENEMY still hold true to their NYHC roots with songs such as After The Fall, Weight Of The World, and Here Today. Although a lot of the guitar riffage borrows from late 80’s thrash, SWORN ENEMY were able to keep true to themselves with an album that pummels ahead like no other with a presence that not many bands are able to capture in the studio.
