Terrestrial Radio – R.I.P.

Today marks the final broadcast for infamous radio pioneer/legend Howard Stern on terrestrial radio before making the move to Sirius Satellite Radio on January 9th, 2006. Yahoo will be carrying live coverage online of the event, which is expected to include STAIND performing their cover of Beetlejuice’s song “This Is Beetle.” Live speeches are also expected to be given by many of Stern’s staff members, including Richard Christy (ex-ICED EARTH, DEATH, etc.).

We’d like to thank Howard and his staff for over two decades of wonderful and hilarious programming and wish him luck in all his future endeavors. He’s truly the King.

In related news, today also marks the death of New York City’s WXRK 92.3 K-Rock which was Howard’s flagship station and will now be “Free FM,” a talk station with David Lee Roth as their morning show host.

Although I've been a Howard fan for years, I laugh more when I listen to Opie & Anthony. Can't decide if I want to get XM or Sirius.

  2. dalenkwint says:

so what format is k-rock becoming? they occasionally play some good f'n music!

  3. WTF says:

David Lee Roth coked out of his mind > Howard talking about some strippers ass

  4. MK Ultra says:

K-rock was lame, but now the "greatest city in the world" has no rock station whatsoever, let alone a metal station. Fucking pathetic. Thank Jebus for MP3s.

  5. kill_for_weed says:

does anybody have the stomach to listen to David Lee Roth for 4 hours?

  6. Nargaroth Iscariot says:

Glad I got my sirius. As for XM vs sirius I go with sirius. I think sirius has a rather shitty metsl station if you want strctley metal. They play somethig good once in a while but its mostly shadows fall metal core crap. They do have some good speicals. For example dec 20th they are having an hour long metal metal speical. On the other hand from what I heard XM has no metal station so you would not hear any metal. I mostly listen to classical, jazz, and classic rock stations for music on sirius. I dont know if xm lets you but sirius you can log onto useing your computer and listen to the stations while on line. If you dont have sisurs and want to see what its like you can log onto http://www.sirius.com and get a free 3 day trial.

    Sirius >>> XM

Whether you're a fan of Stern or O&A, Sirius offers a better package than XM.

"a talk station with David Lee Roth as their morning show host."

XM is vastly superior to Sirius. Sirus seems to think that its a good business model to spend 500 million on a radio personality who has been declining in quality, and quite obviously not caring, spending millions on celbrities who have done no radio before and overinflating stock price. I laugh when Stern says that he hasnt been able to do good radio for 10 years when O and A were much better than him for years when they had the same rules as he did. And as for Stern being a free speech advocate, that is complete horseshit. If he is for free speech why did he have Infinity broadcasting forbid Opie and Anthony from mentioning his name on their show. Infinity also offered O and A a job when they were fired, with the condition that they would be fined 100,000 dollars for mentioning his name. They, quite justifiably, told them to fuck off and waited for XM. I dont event think that most of Stern's fans believe his shit anymore, I guess years of hearing nothing but commercials and Stern bitching about the FCC will do that.
Also, XM has much better equipment than Sirus, smaller and has more memory. Sirius is a year behind, having spent all of their time getting celebrities instead of making a good product.
    Just my two cents

Nargaroth Iscariot- just some infor. Yes XM does let you log on to the computer to listen. They have two metal stations Boneyard and Liquid Metal (LM is only on the net).Boneyard is more classic metal. Liquid Metal play some really heavy music on their playlist. I have heard Behmemoth,Slayer, Cannibal Corpse and Agoraphobic Nosebleed to name a few.

Considering Sirius is attributing 2.4 million new subscribers to Stern, I don't think it was stupid of them to pay him $500 million. Let's see here… 2.4 million new subscribers x $13 a month x 12 months a year x 5 years = $1.872 BILLION dollars. $500 million < $1.872 billion

and I'm not even a fan.

  12. dalenkwint says:

    ^ that is true.

O&A suck IMO. My brother has XM, I have sirius so I know how to compare here:

Sirius has metal, classic metal, classic rock. XM has… nothing good enough for a metal fan. The metal station on Sirius has a lot of the metalcore crap but it has enough good metal mixed in to keep me listening.

Sirius is way better then XM! Everyone I know seems to agree as well…

Thanks for doing the math, you saved an arguement.

  14. kyokushinadam says:

That is forecasted numbers, they barely have 3 million subscribers now, XM has 70 percent of the marketshare. The Wall Street Journal praised XM's business model, not just me. I think they might know what they are talking about. There is no way they will get 2.4 million new subscribers any time soon. The XM technology is superior. As for subscribers. Before Opie and Anthony had signed to XM they had less than 2 million subscribers. They now have close to 6 million. Same price as Sirius, 4 million REAL, not projected subscribers. In addition, they didnt blow 500 million on the two of them, and ended up making far more than Sirus. Do the math

  15. Anus says:

How about we get lives and leave the math out of it.

  16. kyokushinadam says:

As it is not my money, I fucking agree

  17. MKD says:

Satellite radio is crap. Buy cds.

  18. Anus says:

Now that's the truth right there.

  19. blahblahblah says:

I would actually give a shit if Stern hadn't turned into a bland, annoying cliche of himself as he has the last few years.

Seriously, you can only stomach so much of his attempting to be edgy, describing the hotness of some stripper, or talking about what he did that weekend with some minor celebrity. The guy is pathetic now.

And Stern, nor anything else on satellite radio, is worth the bullshit prices on that crap. Thats why I have a CD player in my car, I can listen to it all I want for free.

  20. metalkillsall says:

"Satellite radio is crap. Buy cds"

    Absolutely.

  21. UserFromHell says:

No shit…Fuck all radio, especially satellite. If i wanted to hear an asshole talk, I'd fart.

  22. HiTeck says:

Howard Stern sucks, and he's not funny. Fuck that guy. All he ever does is say "wow, you have a nice ass" or "you have some hot boobs" wow…now that's entertainment. Instead of seeing who he's complimenting…WE GET TO HEAR IT!!!! Now that's edgy.

  23. blahblahblah says:

Yep, nothing more disgusting than listening to that guy sitting on his bony, overpaid, pampered ass for eight hours surrounded by those pathetic no-talent leeches and suck-ups jumping at his every word.

  24. dalenkwint says:

I came to the conclusion that Howard Stern is at least much more entertaining than reading this whole thread. I'm out.

  25. UserFromHell says:

Yet you still posted like 5 times, so i guess thats your fault isn't it. I guess that should be expected out of someone who would pay $13 a month for bullshit music and bullshit talk radio…
