CBGB – Officially Closing – To Be Shut By October 2006

Famed club CBGB is set to close it’s doors by the end of 2006. An official statement by the birthplace to punk rock, and much more, is below:

“We are closing. Our landlord had neither the obligation nor the interest to give us a new lease when our old lease expired in August. Since then, we have been fighting a losing battle, trying to buy time, against our eviction.”

“Unless a miracle were to happen, or the landlord were to have a change of heart, we knew we were gong to close. We just didn’t know when. Now we do.”

“An agreement has been reached… not to give us a new lease, but to give us time to find a new location.”

“CBGB is officially closing by October 2006. No postponements, no court dates, no appeals… that’s it.”

“We are using this time to try and find a new location in New York.”

“The rumors of us trying to open in Las Vegas and/or elsewhere are true… but not what you may think. We are staying in New York and we are looing for a space in downtown Manhattan. We are not moving to Las Vegas or anywhere else. We are, however, looking at opening up a sister club elsewhere… perhaps a CBGB West. But the original CBGB, though it will have to move, will remain in New York.”

  4. bigretardedfag says:

yeah england had some great punk bands, cbgb is still a legendary venue, and america has some great punk bands too. fuck arguing over where punk came from, and just unite under the ideal of what punk is.

korn dude, you're retarded. read the article, READ it this time, and you'll see that it's not the managements fault. I hope the new place is better!

If you have ever been there you will know a ditch in centeral park would be about as nice (cleanliness wise) place had alright sound but it was a shit hole. God dethroned was great there though.

er was hugely influenced by old-school punk. i'm not a fan of punk by any means, but it's funny to see someone with "slayer" in their name shoot down punk. btw…check out slayer's "undisputed attitude" sometime…it's a tribute to the punk bands that they were influenced by and the majority of the album is made up of punk covers.

  9. MK Ultra says:

I hope the new club is smaller, dirtier and has higher prices for weak drinks. Otherwise it was a fun place to see bands.

wat i dont get is, nyc has a landmark board that reviews certain sites that should be protected based on their cultural value to the city. theres an abandoned warehouse in queens that is protected by the city cuz the architect is of some historical significance. lord knows who he is, but i doubt he was more significant than CBGBs. the city should be protecting the site, thats why they we have a landmark board. this is ridiculous

  13. Anus says:

Now we'll get even more kids wearing CBGB shirts even though they've never been to the place and had no idea what it was until a few months ago.

  14. xXxclichexgarbagex says:

Man, does punk does suck. Sure, Slayer was influenced by it, but I know their masterpieces are far from it.

  15. Dmanx says:

First of all, what puropse would shutting this spot down serve? It's the bottom floor of a big building, for fuck's sake.

Second of all, those of you that say punk sucks ass are legally retarted and braindead. If you're thinking of modern pop-punk, then sure, I'll have to agree with you. But real punk was the reason metal got a kick in the ass and didn't die out when Sabbath booted Ozzy out (that and Motorhead). Where do you think Venom, Slayer, and pretty much the ENTIRE thrash scene got their ideas? What do you think Metallica used to listen to in between Diamond Head and Holocaust? I'd hate to break it to you, but all your idols are punk fans at least.

Oh yea, and you CAN hear punk influnce in everything Slayer's done. They just layered it with screeching guitars, but the song structure of pretty much all thrash is either punk inspired, or inspired by bands that love punk.

  16. xXxclichexgarbagex says:

Sure, no one argued that, prick. But the point is: IT'S NOT PUNK.

  17. RIPSFH says:

Sucks that the place is closing. At least they are giving them time to find a new spot. Wish I could have gone to the original venue though.

I was playin THE WARRIORS on PS2 the other night and finally beat it, and at some point towards the end I remember seeing them standing in front of CBGB, if I recall the same scene's in the movie.

Sucks they're finally actually closing, too bad I live in MO haha, hope they find a cool new spot to tear up.
