Losa – The Perfect Moment
Author: Mark Thompson
When one reads over a bands bio, you would expect to get a grip on what you might encounter upon putting the CD into the player. If a band has the audacity to label themselves as having “depth and ingenuity in everything they do,” and stating that the listener should be “taken back” after the first listen better be able to back up such a statement. This is not the case with LOSA from Nacogdoches, TX.
LOSA attempts to be dynamic in their delivery with a slower paced album, but they do not deliver the goods as a band who wants to be respected for the, “passion of their live shows” should have a much more powerful lead singer and one who can actually sing instead of gurgle and scream as this would create more intensity in their presence as opposed to a version of Dani Filth. The guitars do nothing more than chug away at mid-tempo while the drummer attempts to add accents outside the groove to enhance the vibe but it seems very unnatural.
A song like Linear Prophecy is predictable in its tempo changes and the build ups seem almost juvenile in its approach as they fail attempting to be ‘artsy’ with their structures while a track like Unsuspecting Mind in nothing more than a novice approach to being a death metal version of TOOL. While I’m sure the band may actually possess some talent in their musicianship, they fail to put this talent into their songwriting as the songs seem forced and not natural and this tends to bring the listener to a stand still on what to think of LOSA.
