Jumbo’s Killcrane – The Slow Decay
Author: Erin Fox
Jumbo’s Killcrane is becoming one of the pre-eminent bands in the stoner/doom field, here on their fourth album, we find the band in
fine form whether slithering through a plodding deathjazz riff or
bashing out an intoxicated sludge tempo, JKC is a three piece monster
that times my be trudging, but always sounds as enormous as Godzilla lumbering above frightened Tokyo citizenry.
The syrupy tempos allow for plenty of time changes and
experimentations. Sometimes can sound like a detuned, slowed
down version of early Soundgarden or Monster Magnet which is
certainly in their favor. ‘Coital Abyss’ is a lurking, weighty affair
that showcases the groups jamming abilities, while the title track
is a heavy dose of pure and total doom that expands on the
gargling vox and thundering accents the group is well known for.
The bottom line on the track ‘Brown’ is that it is heavy as hell, a ten
ton slab of electrified, doomed out crunching. The band are well
known for their drinking abilities, and it is hard to imagine how they
can remember the complex change ups and time signature switches completely wasted, but in any event, it works for JKC.
The MCD closes with the song ‘Die, Stabbed’ and it’s proggish
Voivod style intro is a cool change of pace from the doom attack,
then the band launches into some thick axe work that is akin to
having your face slowly dragged across the pavement
