Kreator – Enemy of God
Author: Erin Fox
Fans of the German thrash juggernaut Kreator have reason
to rejoice this January! ‘Enemy of God’ is by far the best Kreator
album since 1990′s ‘Coma of Souls’. I can see a pattern where
many of the thrash pioneers of the 1990s are finding their sound
again, and Kreator have returned to the speed metal guitars and
venomous sounds that made them one of the most popular thrash
bands ever.
Kreator are the German counterpart to Slayer, engineering complex
riffs with precision and providing galloping beats that assail the
listener’s ears with sheer, brute force.
Lyrically, the album is centered around themes of religion, war
and corruption. ‘Voices of the Dead’ includes a somber introduction,
giving way to the trademark guitar work the groups older efforts
were well known for and the gruff voicings of Mille Petrozza. ‘Voices’
is perhaps one of the most commercial sounding songs that I have
heard from the band, however the track’s violent guitar attack retains
the credibility of true thrash at the same time.’Murder Fantasies’ is
audio war, with its pummeling double bass of long time member
Jurgen Reil that brings the ‘Extreme Aggression’ album to mind.
This song features a guest appearance from Michael Arnott (Arch
Enemy, Carcass). Christian Geisler delivers a very heavy bass line
in ‘When Death Takes Its Dominion’, he really fills in the gaps and
gives the band’s music a full, wall-of-sound feel. ‘Suicide Terrorist’ is another classic Kreator track with lyrics focused on terrorism and
suicide bombings. This song is a very straightforward thrash jam
with a blistering tremolo enhanced solo near it’s end. Sami Yli-Sirni
