Rotting Christ – Sanctus Diavolus
Author: Aidan Gray
Sakis returns, flying in on his black wings of whatever he doth choose to fly in on, with this latest Rotting Christ effort “Sanctus Diavolus”. Unfortunately, the band seems to be going down the same path as their national football/soccer team – hitting a peak of some mediocre releases, and then come out with a defining effort, then plummet back into the sea of the unknown. Well I shouldn’t really go that far, as these Greeks really do have some superb tunes on “Sanctus Diavolus”. As a defined breed of symphonic black metal, Rotting Christ really lay it on thick with 10 tracks of demonic deliverance. It’s hard to believe there is only 3 people in this band, with frontman Sakis holding it down with the trifecta of vocals, guitars, and keyboards. Drummer Themis offers some defining double bass that sends chills down your spine when deftly mixed in with Sakis’ 5 star programming skills. Keeping this “2nd generation” of black metal alive, Rotting Christ needs to get over to North America – and fast.
