Turisas – Battle Metal

Author: Rod Breslau

With the recent departures of Einherjer and Windir, the folk/Viking/battle metal genre lost two greats that provided excellent music. But recently in the past couple of years, new bands such as Ensiferum and Asmegin have given new and exciting life to this side of metal. Finland’s Turisas, who is now signed to Century Media Records, is the newest band to enter this field, and their debut album "Battle Metal" doesn’t disappoint.

Their music can be compared to Ensiferum and Finntroll, with a mix of their own uniqueness that will have you running through the forests with your sword in no time. The album starts out with a 1:30 intro with melancholy female and male vocals, as well their marching-like horn instrument, which persists throughout the album (keyboards). This leads right into the next track, "As Torches Rise", which displays both clean and harsh male vocals, as well as catchy riffing, more horn playing, and great drum work. The third! Track, "Battle Metal", is one of the best Viking/folk songs I’ve heard in a long time and emphasizes completely what the genre is about. The chanting of "Final, Battle!" reigns throughout the song by Warlord Nyg
