Five Foot Thick – Circles

Author: Aidan Gray

Five Foot Thick’s recent release of ‘Circles’ definitely defines the words “pissed off”. As one of Washington’s largest regional bands, they could be compared to that of Insolence in the Bay Area, in both of their style of music, and angst. Unfortunately, the demise of Insolence and their style of music could spell out a lot for what’s to come for Five Foot Thick. The musicianship is there, the guitars are heavy and stylish, and there’s some hefty double bass, but the rappy vocals and the up-and-down style of singing that leads into some rather stale choruses would really lead the average listener of today’s metal community to be turned off. ‘Sirens’, and ‘Full On’, are the top two picks for the disc, but overall this offering from Five Foot Thick just runs a little dry and repetitive after a while.

Ultimately, it’s great to see a band like Five Foot Thick try to dig in and find their own style and niche as a band, but with this being the predecessing release to ‘Blood Puddle’ it shows that they have moved on and away for the sound that unfortunately would not do the band justice for their amount of popularity.
